The Stockerau expressway S5 is an expressway in Lower Austria and runs from the Stockerau junction on the Danube bank autobahn to Krems an der Donau . Through the Danube bridge Traismauer and the S33 , it represents a high-level connection from the Weinviertel to the state capital St. Pölten .
The S5 stands between the Stockerau junction and the Jettsdorf junction in terms of road traffic law and has the status of a motorway and requires a vignette or toll . The rest of the route to Krems is currently the only expressway section in Austria that does not require a toll, as it has not yet been developed here. The state infrastructure company ASFINAG operates this road and maintains it.
Route sections
From the Stockerau junction to the Jettsdorf junction, the S5 ranks as a motorway in terms of road traffic law . The central division between Stockerau and Königsbrunn am Wagram also serves as flood protection. At the Jettsdorf junction there is a junction to the Traismauer Danube bridge on the Krems expressway , which leads to St. Pölten .
The rest of the route from Jettsdorf to Krems-Ost is currently designed as a conventional open-air road at the level of a car road with one lane in each direction, but without crossings at the same level. A full expansion is planned. From Krems-Ost, the S5 is again four-lane, but has several traffic lights. At the junction with Kremser Straße (B37), the S5 changes to Donau Straße (B3).
The Stockerauer Schnellstraße forms part of the so-called regional ring around Vienna in connection with other expressways and motorways .
history
Before the S5 was expanded, the road was part of the Danube federal highway B3. Until 2012, this was also recognized by the number of kilometers on the road, which up to this point began at the Stockerau junction at kilometer 68. This is the distance from the start of the B3 in Engelhartstetten to the Stockerau junction. Since 2012, the 35.5 km long full extension section of the S5 has been re-kilometered, starting at 0 at the Stockerau junction and extending to the Jettsdorf junction. On the undeveloped section from the Jettsdorf junction to Krems-Mitte, the previous kilometering of the B3 continues from km 103.5. After the first construction phase in 1997, the route between Stockerau and Tulln was called Stockerauer Straße (B304). Due to the Federal Road Transmission Act of March 29, 2002, the street name was changed to Stockerauer Schnellstraße (S5) and the section to Krems was added.
The first expanded section between Stockerau and Tulln was opened in 1997. The last one so far between Kollersdorf and Grafenwörth on June 29, 2007. During the expansion work, a further lane was built next to the existing lane and the top speed increased from 100 to 130 km / h.
