Hausleiten is a market town with 3800 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Korneuburg district in Lower Austria .

geography

Hausleiten is located at the southwestern end of the Korneuburg district , between the cities of Stockerau and Tulln . Located in the southwest of the Weinviertel , the church of St. Agatha on the Wagram , visible from afar, towers over the Tullnerfeld . The Wagram, the former northern steep bank of the Urdonau , which drops about 30 m towards the Danube plain, is a striking terrain step. Its soil quality and south-facing position are ideal for creating vineyards. Potatoes, onions and many types of grain thrive on the heights of the Wagram. The wide plain of the Tullner Basin extends to the south , first with fertile fields, then with its floodplain. This Aug belt with its unspoilt vegetation and rich fauna, in which the Hausleitner cadastral communities of Perzendorf , Schmida and Zaina are located, used to be crossed by numerous tributaries and backwaters of the Danube . Again and again the Danube was a great danger for animals and humans, and floods caused great damage. Regulations (most recently the Greifenstein power plant construction ) remedied the situation, but brought about drastic changes. The area of the market town covers 61.03 square kilometers. 14.26 percent of the area is forested.

history

The area at the Wagram was settled in prehistoric times. This is proven by finds in the places along the Wagram, e.g. B. in Eggendorf , Pettendorf , Gaisruck , Zissersdorf , but also in Hausleiten, where Hallstatt-era settlement remains were found in the Second World War when a splinter trench was built near Marienbründl. Already at the end of the Stone Age a relatively dense network of settlements was recognizable along the Wagram.

From approx. 90 AD to approx. 490 AD, the Danube formed the border with the Roman province of Noricum . North of the Danube in the Marcomanni settlement area , the area up to the Wagram formed a kind of no man's land, where there were isolated Roman watch posts. In the course of the migration of peoples , the area came under the rule of the Great Moravian Empire , to which a considerable part of the Weinviertel and the Waldviertel belonged until around 900. It stood in opposition to the Frankish Empire and reached its peak between 894 and 899 under Duke Svatopluk , who commissioned the Slav apostles Cyril and Method with the Christianization of the area. Little by little, the Slavs were pushed north and in 899 the area came under King Arnulf to the Diocese of Passau , this was confirmed by Otto II in 975 .

The Diocese of Passau, founded in 739 by Bonifatius , was the largest diocese at the time of the Holy Roman Empire with 42,000 km² and extended over Vienna to Hungary . Today's parish of Hausleiten also belonged to the “Danube Bishopric”. The year of the founding of the parish St. Agatha (also St. Aythen) cannot be precisely determined, but falls in the time around 900, when Bavarian monks colonized and proselytized this area. The old patronage “St. Agatha ”refers to Bavaria. Many circumstances suggest that pastoral care in the area around Hausleiten was in order at the time of the death of Passau Bishop Pilgrim in 991 and that the Church of St. Agatha on the Wagram was already standing during his lifetime .

From the location of the church and its documented relationship to the place, it can be concluded that it was the first and - for a long time - the only building on this part of the Wagram. The name "Hausleiten" did not appear until the beginning of the 14th century, but earlier - e.g. B. 1189 - is described by an “Albertus, decanus st. agatha ”reports. Later came to “St. Agatha ”with the addition“ on the Wagram ”. When the name was given, the church was initially only mentioned, then the exact location was added, the place name only appears relatively late, initially again with the addition of the church patron ("Hausleiten bei St. Agatha"). As early as the 10th century, the “St. Agatha Church on the Wagram ”as the main church in this area to replace St. Michaels Church. This originally oldest church - located in Kirchheim Neuaigen , which later disappeared - was often a victim of the Danube floods and was also not centrally located. As a result, the church in Hausleiten developed into the center (original parish) of a huge pastoral care district that reached to Schöngrabern in the north . Originally fourteen branch churches and chapels were parish to St. Agatha, including z. B. Schöngrabern, Hollabrunn , Göllersdorf , Sierndorf , Stetteldorf , Neuaigen.

The oldest parish land register dates from around 1324. After that, the Bishop of Passau had 38 subjects in Hausleiten, the parish owned 28 houses and a mill. The parish school was first mentioned in 1350. The weekly market was held in the square in front of the church for centuries. In 1544 the place remained Catholic despite the turmoil of the Reformation and the Protestant Count Hardegg . In 1590 Hausleiten had 65 houses, 49 of which belonged to the bishop, ten to the pastor, two to the church and four to Count Hardegg. In 1679 the plague raged in Hausleiten, which is also reminiscent of the Pestmarterl of 1713.

In 1758, Dean Gschellhammer had the rectory and outbuildings built; in 1770, judges and local residents donated the Stations of the Cross. The motif of the market coat of arms appeared for the first time in the seal of the deed of foundation. In 1783 the parish came to the newly founded Diocese of Vienna . In 1804 the Passau property was confiscated by the state; the rule of Stetten arose, for which the “castle” (today the community center) was built as a rent office with a large toe barn in 1839.

In 1805 Napoleon's troops looted the place and the parish. In 1832 Emperor Franz I granted the place the right to hold two annual markets; there used to be weekly markets in front of the church. In 1850, as a result of the revolution of 1848, the mayor and council took over the duties of village judge. Three large communities emerged in the parish, one of which was Hausleiten (with gold giving , Schmida and Oberzögersdorf ). In 1868 a letter collection point and stagecoach stop were built opposite the old Passau inn (today: Eder). In 1904 the Stockerau - Absdorf railway line was opened .

In 1920, seven small communities were formed from the three large communities, one of which was Hausleiten with gold. In 1933 the first streets were paved. In 1935 there were 28 commercial and 35 agricultural businesses in the town. In 1941 a secondary school was founded, which was initially temporarily housed in the primary school building (until 1965).

After the Second World War , Hausleiten was part of the Soviet occupation zone until 1955. During the major municipal reform of 1971/72, the previously independent villages of Gaisruck, Gold ents, Hausleiten, Perzendorf, Pettendorf, Schmida, Seitzersdorf-Wolfpassing, Zaina and Zissersdorf were combined to form the market town of Hausleiten . Since then, the municipality has coincided with the parish, as it has been for centuries. Due to the good transport connections to Vienna , numerous settlements have been built in Hausleiten in recent years, so that the population has grown by almost a third in the last decade.

Population development

The strong population growth in the period from 1981 to 2011 is due to both a positive birth balance and a strongly positive migration balance. In the ten years between 2001 and 2011, 600 more people moved to Hausleiten than moved away from Hausleiten. The birth balance in the same period was +76.
The statistics for 2011 show 3,558 main residents. There are also around 400 secondary residents
The statistics for November 1, 2014 show 4,137 main residents. There are also 458 secondary residents
