Grabern is a market town with 1694 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Hollabrunn district in Lower Austria ( Austria ).

Grabern is located in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the market town covers 30.94 square kilometers. 7.56 percent of the area is forested.

history

The place Schöngrabern was mentioned in a document in 1319 and in 1535 it was elevated to the market. During the French wars of 1805/07, the place was destroyed by fires.

  • Mittergrabern Castle: The mighty three-storey castle was built in the 16th century as a hook-shaped complex with an attic storey. In 1834 the tower and attic level were removed and the complex was expanded in 1874 by adding two wings and a staircase at the rear. A restoration took place in 1986/87. The façade is simply structured: corner blocks, bezel-framed windows on the ground floor, grooved Ferster roofs on the upper floors, and additional grooved sills on the second floor.
  • Catholic parish church Mittergrabern hl. John the Baptist
  • Catholic parish church Schöngrabern Mariä Birth: In Schöngrabern there is a Romanesque church from the 13th century (built around 1210/1230), a unique jewel of Romanesque architecture.
  • Stone Bible by Schöngrabern : The apse of the parish church shows a rich figure decoration and representations from the Old and New Testament.
  • Lapidarium in the rectory: The lapidarium - a medieval masonry from 1473 and a brick vault from 1791, the time of the renovation - is located under today's rectory. In these rooms, sculptures, fragments and remains of medieval architecture that were found in later masonry are shown, including the former gallery capital and its base. There is also a photo documentation of the parish church.

In 2010 there were 65 agricultural and forestry holdings, 44 of which were full-time farms that farmed 87 percent of the area. In 1999 there were 91 full-time and 56 part-time businesses. In the manufacturing sector, eight companies employed forty people, mainly in the manufacture of goods, but also in construction. The service sector employed 93 people in 55 companies, almost half of whom were employed in social and public services (as of 2011).
