Abbot Columban Luser

Columban Luser OSB (born November 9, 1955 in Seitzersdorf-Wolfpassing , Lower Austria ) is the 65th abbot of Göttweig Abbey .

Life

He was baptized Gerhard and grew up in Stockerau . In 1966 he entered the boys' seminar in Hollabrunn and studied at the federal high school in Hollabrunn , where he passed the matriculation examination in 1974 . He completed his theology studies at the universities in Vienna and Salzburg with the title Mag. Theol. from. In his master's thesis he wrote about the youth work of the Legion of Mary in the Archdiocese of Vienna.

Encouraged by his former religion teacher Hans Hermann Groër , who later became cardinal and archbishop of Vienna , he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig, where he was dressed with the religious name Columban on September 8, 1976 and made solemn profession on September 8, 1980 . On August 10, 1980, he was ordained a priest in Göttweig by Bishop Franz Žak .

In 1980 he worked as a chaplain in Pfaffendorf , was from 1981 collegiate chaplain in Göttweig and from 1983 pastor in Mautern . From 1981 to 1988 he was also a professor of religion in Krems an der Donau . From 1990 he was responsible for the novices and clergy at Göttweig Abbey and from 1993 headed the boys' choir. From August 1987 to August 2001 he was the spiritual director of the Legion of Mary in Austria. In 1998 he became prior of the house of St. Josef in Maria Roggendorf and in 2001 head of the retreat house St. Altmann and pastor of Unterbergern in the Dunkelsteinerwald . From 2004 to 2005 he was provisional for Hofstetten-Grünau in the Pielachtal .

On September 1, 2007 he became prior and thus deputy of Abbot Clemens Lashofer , who died on July 6, 2009. On August 14, 2009, Father Columban was elected Abbot of Göttweig Abbey for 12 years. As a motto he chose Deus communio est ("God is community"). On September 6, 2009, the Bishop of St. Pölten, Klaus Küng , donated the abbot's benediction in the Göttweiger collegiate church.
