Maria Roggendorf is a cadastral parish and a Marian pilgrimage site with around 130 residents (2018) in the municipality of Wullersdorf in the Hollabrunn district in Lower Austria .
geography
Maria Roggendorf is located north in the western Weinviertel in Lower Austria in the political district of Hollabrunn . The neighboring villages are u. a. Hart-Aschendorf and Wullersdorf.
history
The place name Ruchendorf was first mentioned in a document in 1230, in the early modern period the rule of Ruckhendorff existed here by the later extinct noble family of Ruckhendorff (coat of arms: split, front four times obliquely divided by gold and blue, rear silver without picture). In 1784 Roggendorf became a local vicariate and in 1782 an independent parish. On July 22nd, 1971, the local council decided to change the place name to "Maria Roggendorf".
Marian pilgrimage
A Marienkapelle, which was then a subsidiary church of Nappersdorf , has been documented in the village since 1291 . From the 15th century a Marian pilgrimage developed . In 1653 the pilgrimage church of the Nativity of Mary , built by Joh. Angelo Canevale, was completed. After a fire in 1695, the church was rebuilt by Carlo Antonio Carlone and received its current appearance.
In the 18th century, the pilgrimage reached its climax with more than 5000 pilgrims at the great Marian festivals. Joseph II forbade pilgrimages to Mary in 1785. From 1924 there were again public pilgrimages for the feast of the birth of Mary on September 8th.
Hans Hermann Groër , who later became the Archbishop of Vienna, began monthly pilgrimages on October 13, 1969 in the spirit of Fátima , the most important pilgrimage site in Portugal. On August 6, 1988, Pope John Paul II elevated the pilgrimage church to a minor basilica with the Apostolic Letter Intra Vindobonensis .
Maria Roggendorf has two images of grace . Originally, the late Gothic Radiant Madonna (a wooden sculpture) was mainly worshiped, as the pilgrimage pictures show. Since the monthly pilgrimages, the “affectionate representation of Our Lady” painted on leather (see illustration) has moved into the focus of Marian piety.
