The Absdorf-Hippersdorf-Stockerau line is a branch line in Austria . It connects the Nordwestbahn in Stockerau with the Franz-Josefs-Bahn in Absdorf-Hippersdorf.

history

On the occasion of the construction of the Floridsdorf - Stockerau railway line, which was later taken over by the Nordwestbahn , thought of a later extension via Krems an der Donau to Budweis .

These plans came to nothing when the Kaiser-Franz-Josephs-Bahn was built with a branch line from Krems to Absdorf .

Only a new law, which made the construction of local railways easier thanks to less stringent requirements, made the construction of a rail connection between Stockerau and Absdorf- Hippersdorf interesting again and some pre-commissioned route variants emerged:

  • October 10, 1885: Local train from Stockerau to a suitable meeting point with the Franz-Josephs-Bahn between the Tullner Danube bridge and Absdorf-Hippersdorf.
  • October 10, 1885: Stockerau - Absdorf-Hippersdorf local railway
  • May 27, 1890: Railway between Neu Aigen - Stetteldorf - Stockerau

However, all these construction projects failed until the pre-concession for a standard gauge local railway Stockerau - Absdorf-Hippersdorf was granted on May 20, 1894 and the route revision for the project was carried out on June 20 and 21, 1895.

Between May 11 and 13, 1896, the negotiating committee for the route via Hausleiten , Starnwörth and Gaisruck was carried out. But it was not until 1902 that the last problems were solved and the question of financing clarified.

On October 11, 1902, the concession, limited to 90 years, was granted, which stipulated the completion of the line within two years and the operation by the state on account of the concessionaires.

On July 7, 1903, the constituent general assembly of the "local railway Absdorf - Stockerau" took place. The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the railway took place in Hausleiten at the end of September 1903.

The preliminary overhaul of the newly built railway line took place on October 1, 1904 and the test drive required for the technical and police inspection took place on October 3. On October 4, 1904, the 17-kilometer route was opened to public transport - when the Hausleiten station, the Gaisruck stop and loading point and the Ober-Zögersdorf stop were released.

The operating agreement with the state was concluded on June 6 and 10, 1905.

The single-track railway line Stockerau - Absdorf-Hippersdorf was actually a pure local railway, but after the Austrian Northwest Railway was nationalized, the branch line also played the role of a connecting line between the two state railway lines.

With the commissioning of the Breitenlee marshalling yard , freight train traffic in the Vienna area was also reorganized. The plan was to run the Westbahn freight trains via Tulln - Absdorf-Hippersdorf - Stockerau to the Breitenlee marshalling yard.

For this purpose, a track loop should be built near Absdorf-Hippersdorf to enable the trains to travel directly on the route mentioned. Construction began after the inspection that took place on August 19, 1921. On June 1, 1922, operations began on the new loop.

Furthermore, the double-track expansion of the Stockerau - Absdorf-Hippersdorf line was planned. However, the economic problems of the young Republic of Austria prevented the completion of the station in Breitenlee and thus the double-track expansion. This also gave up the reorganization of freight train traffic. As a result, the newly built railway loop lost its importance and on May 15, 1929 its operation was stopped. On July 30, 1932, the railway authorities approved the removal of the tracks, but this was not carried out.

On January 1, 1933, the Stockerau - Absdorf-Hippersdorf local railway was nationalized.

During the Second World War , the importance of the railway increased again, as it was part of the bypass route around Vienna and so the loop was put back into operation on October 6, 1940. The route was also expanded.

When the railway bridge over the Danube in Tulln was blown up by the German Wehrmacht in 1945, the Franz-Josefs-Bahn was interrupted until 1948. The only way to send trains from Vienna to the north on this railway line was the Nordwestbahnbrücke and the Stockerau - Absdorf-Hippersdorf line.

After operations on the main line of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn had been continuously resumed, the loop was also worthless again. It was closed on February 1, 1950, but started up again on May 20, 1951. The final setting took place on January 13, 1953 and in 1959 it was removed. In order to be able to run freight trains in Absdorf-Hippersdorf from the Nordbahn via Stockerau to Tulln to the Westbahn without "crashing" , the loop was rebuilt in 2009 - also with regard to the Vienna Woods Tunnel ; analogously, the Tullner Westschleife will be reactivated in Tulln.

Hausleiten station was closed between 1953 and 1956.

The opening of the high-speed railway connection Vienna - Stockerau also brought new life to the Absdorf-Hippersdorf - Stockerau line. Modern, train-connected barrier systems and the closure of unrestricted road crossings made it possible to increase the driving speed.

At the same time as the Franz-Josefs-Bahn, the Absdorf-Hippersdorf - Stockerau line was electrified. On May 27, 1979, the line renovation was completed with the start of electrical operations. It is fully integrated into the Eastern Region Transport Association and is served by the S4 line of the Wiener Schnellbahn .

Currently, the route is usually driven every hour on weekdays except Saturday, and every 2 hours in the morning and on the weekend all day. During rush hour there are additional repeater trains between Vienna and Hausleiten.
