Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel is a town with 7299 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Lower Austrian Weinviertel . It is located in the south of the Mistelbach district , not far from the federal capital Vienna .

geography

Wolkersdorf and its northern environs around 1873 (recording sheet of the 3rd regional recording )
Dry grass on the Wartberg

To the west of Riedenthal lies the Wartberg, on the steep western slope of which there are not only wooded areas but also valuable Pannonian dry grassland over tertiary sand. Rare and endangered species grow on these dry, nutrient-poor but species-rich areas, such as spring hawks , Austrian pygmy clover , sword elephant , narrow-leaf flax , yellow tooth rust , pasque flower and horse donkey . The areas are endangered, among other things, by the robinia imported from North America , which accumulates nitrogen in the soil, thereby fertilizing it and making it populable for common species, which then displace the rare, specialized species. Lean, unsuitable sites for farming have been grazed with sheep and goats in the Weinviertel since the Neolithic and thus kept open. In the course of the intensification and mechanization of agriculture, this form of cultivation was given up a few decades ago and the areas are now threatened with bushy bushes and, in the long term, disappearing together with their flora and fauna. For this reason, the Austrian Nature Conservation Union and the City of Wolkersdorf have drawn up a maintenance concept that is intended to secure the stock. Building on this, regular maintenance measures are carried out and, for example, bushes are removed.

The Wolkersdorf municipality is part of the Hochleithenwald , the largest oak and hornbeam forest in the Weinviertel.

The municipality includes the following five localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel (4343)

The community consists of the cadastral communities Münichsthal, Obersdorf, Pfösing, Riedenthal and Wolkersdorf.

The incorporation took place between 1969 and 1972.

history

Wolkersdorf Castle

The first, but controversial, documentary mention of Wolkersdorf took place in 1170, around 100 years after the assumed foundation. A secure mention is made in a donation from 1186, in the next few decades further evidence of the existence of Wolkersdorf emerged. According to legend, the name "Wolkersdorf" was derived from a nobleman named Wolfger, who is said to have built the "Veste Wolfgersdorf". However, this originally accepted naming is now heavily questioned. It seems much more likely that the name can be traced back to a place in Franconia that already existed at the time . Accordingly, settlers from Franconia who settled in what is now Wolkersdorf named this place after their hometown. Mistelbach, Falkenstein, Drosendorf, Retz and Retzbach could have been named after the same pattern. These place names can be found both in Franconia and in the Weinviertel. Even in the centuries after the town was founded, there are strong ties with Franconia, especially with the Burgraves of Nuremberg , who maintained fiefs in Wolkersdorf for a long time , so that Wolkersdorf is likely to be founded by Franconian settlers.

The castle (the "Veste Wolfgersdorf") was built as a moated castle and changed owners and uses several times over the centuries. For a short time it also served as a hunting lodge. Today it is owned by the municipality of Wolkersdorf.

Today's Kellergasse was once part of the former Kaiserstraße. For thousands of years it was the only connecting road between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic. It is the connecting corridor between the Baltic States and the Mediterranean, the imperial capital Vienna and Bohemia. On this trade route there was the important mail traffic, freight transport such as cloth, salt and linen goods, but above all the wine trade. The wine from Wolkersdorf was delivered to the court of the Russian tsar.

From May 16, 1809, Emperor Franz I resided in the Wolkersdorf rectory. On May 29th, in Wolkersdorfer handbillet, he announced to Andreas Hofer that he would not sign a peace treaty that would separate Tyrol from Austria. The content of this proclamation was nullified by the Znojmo armistice in July . Between July 7 and 10, Napoleon Bonaparte took his headquarters in Wolkersdorf Castle in the course of the Battle of Wagram . The revolutionary Ernst Franz Salvator von Violand from 1848 lived in Wolkersdorf until his escape.

With the commissioning of Laa Eastern Railway and the railway station Wolkersdorf in 1870 the massive enlargement of municipal area and population began, as it is for the near Vienna -working officers came, industrial and other high earners from Vienna as an alternative residential site in question.

Ludwig Anzengruber wrote the farmer's comedy Der G'wissenswurm in 1874 in the former guest house Zum golden Strauss .

In the final days of World War II , Wolkersdorf was attacked from the air on March 20, 1945, killing 36 civilians and destroying several buildings. On April 12, street fights took place in Wolkersdorf with the use of artillery and Stalin organs , after which the German troops, in view of the overwhelming strength of the Soviet army, moved towards Ulrichskirchen and Kreuttal . Before that, six bridges in the municipality of Wolkersdorf were blown up. On the same day the Russians occupied Obersdorf, killing three civilians by artillery fire. On April 13th, the village of Münichsthal was occupied by the Soviets without a fight. The population was driven from their homes and had to live in the wine cellars and barns until mid-May. Münichsthal was looted by the Red Army and the entire livestock was confiscated. Two civilians were abducted by the Russians. During the fighting in Riedenthal, 13 German and around 20 Russian soldiers were killed. The mayor of Riedenthal wrote about these events: “After the artillery bombardment, the Russians came. The soldiers of the combat force behaved correctly and decently. But the following entourage was the opposite. "

A military cemetery was set up in the Wolkersdorf cemetery during the First World War, in which fallen Wehrmacht soldiers were also buried during the Second World War. In 1976 the remains were exhumed and reburied in the newly built military cemetery in Retz . Also from 1945 comes a mass grave occupied by 27 victims of the Brno death march , which is also located in the cemetery.

In 1969 the market town of Wolkersdorf was elevated to a town council.

In December 2005, on the initiative of the municipality, a working group was founded which carried out and published a project to document the history of the Jewish population in Wolkersdorf.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 6191 inhabitants. In 1991 the municipality had 5696 inhabitants, in 1981 5062 and in 1971 4669 inhabitants.
