The Roman Catholic parish church Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel is located in the municipality Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel in the Mistelbach district in Lower Austria . It is consecrated to St. Margaret and is located in the Wolkersdorf dean's office in the vicariate Unter dem Manhartsberg of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The building is under monument protection ( list entry ).

Location description

The church stands on a hill north above the church square. From the church square, the church can be reached via a staircase with baroque statues. In earlier times there was a cemetery around the church .

history

In 1328 a parish in Wolkersdorf was first mentioned in a document. In 1450 it passed to the sovereign. The Gothic choir was built before 1350 under Stephan von Slaet . The nave was renewed in 1727. The tower and the baroque additions to the choir date from 1754. In 1968 the church was restored.

architecture

Church exterior

The house of God is a baroque hall building with a retracted Gothic choir and a western tower. The high nave rises above the choir and with a gable roof covered. The church facade is simply structured with double pilasters and arched windows. The massive church tower is presented on the western facade . It is flanked by two sloping gables with a vase crown. The west tower has four zones, divided by double strips and plastering fields. The bell helmet is powerfully built and constricted. Below the top there is a lantern that was renewed in 1965. The church has three tower entrances in slightly swinging, triangular-gabled fields. On the second floor there is a round arch niche with a baroque stone figure of St. Margaret. It was created in the middle of the 18th century. The Gothic choir is closed polygonally and structured by stepped buttresses . The baroque arched windows on the north and south sides are set in the walled-in Gothic pointed arch windows of the polygon. The garments and the tracery of the pointed arch windows are preserved as a frame. To the north and south of the choir there are two-storey, baroque extensions. There is also a baroque stair tower on the north side. On the south-east wall of the choir there is a baroque mount of Olives in a round arch niche. The group of figures is arranged in a scenic manner. An angel with a chalice and a sleeping apostle are depicted around the praying Jesus. The group dates from the first half of the 18th century and was restored in 1968. There is also a tombstone for Wilhelm Grueber with the year 1729, an inscription plate on a rock base and a mourning angel in the former cemetery. A baroque epitaph commemorates Andreas Glaser , forester and hunter in the service of Emperor Charles VI. The year 1735 is on the chronogram.

At the staircase to the church there are six baroque stone figures from 1727. They represent St. Joseph , St. Maria Immaculata , St. Leopold , St. Karl Borromeo , St. John Nepomuk and St. Florian .

Church interior

The nave of the church is four-bay and barrel-vaulted with stitch caps over double belt arches . The girders rest on pilaster strips that crown the beams . The three-axis organ loft rests on pillars and is arched with a groin . This has applied bandwork . The triumphal arch is rounded and drawn in. On the triumphal arch wall is a mighty, polychrome stuccoed double-headed eagle with the coat of arms and motto of Emperor Charles VI. from 1727. The triumphal arch wall is decorated with bands. The two-bay choir closes in the 5/8 end. Above it is a groin vault with a rosette keystone and bundles of whorls on consoles with foliage and heads in relief , reaching up to half the height of the room . These include round-robin services with profiled bases. The baroque oratorio windows with wrought iron railings are walled up. In the south wall of the choir there is a four-part, Gothic session table with pointed gables and three-pass tracery . At the back of the sessio there are remains of a painted curtain. The sacristy on the south side of the choir has a groin vault. In the baroque confessional chamber on the north side there is a needle cap barrel vault.

Furnishing

The high altar from 1768 consists of a baroque column retable between adoring angels. The pilaster-framed wall retable stands on a high base. In Altar extract which is radiation glory with cherubs represented. The altarpiece shows Saint Margaret and was painted in 1832. To the side are two baroque carved figures depicting Saint Sebastian and Saint Rochus .

The two side altars of the same type were built around 1780. They consist of niche retables with delicate, black and gold rococo frames with putti heads, rocailles and urns of flames. The baroque carved figures date from around 1760. St. Joseph is depicted on the left side altar and Maria Immaculata on the right .

The pulpit was built around 1770. On the cover there are putti with attributes of Christian virtues . The crossways reliefs are by E. Kerschbaum from 1968. In the church there is also a late baroque, small-figure crucifixion group. The dining grid is wrought iron and dates from 1755. The baroque baptismal font is made of marble , is hunched and stands on a renewed balustrade plinth . The confessionals are baroque and have carved cheeks. The oil painting of a crucifix dates from 1866 and is a copy after Anthony van Dyck . The oil painting of St. John Nepomuk is from the end of the 18th century.

organ

The organ from 1896 is in a neo-baroque case. On the gallery parapet is a late Baroque panel with four reliefs depicting the “ Annunciation ”, St. Cecilia and King David .
