from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bandelwerk , also Bandlwerk or Bandwerk , is a symmetrical surface ornament that was particularly common in France during the Régence around 1715–1730 . In southern Germany , however, it lasted until around 1745, although asymmetrical rococo began in France as early as 1730. It resembles the arabesque and the acanthus leaves , but the leaf-borne tendrils are replaced by fine curved ribbons, the bands, and decorated with flowers. It was mostly combined with foliage , which is why foliage and banding is used as a collective term. The roots of this decorative element lie in French art with the artists Bérain and Marot .

It is mainly found on friezes , capitals and chord arches .

The fluttering ribbons of the fruit pendants, sometimes carried by putti , are also referred to as ribbon work.
