history

In 1941 the engineer Villum Kann Rasmussen founded the company V. Kann Rasmussen & Co in Copenhagen. One of his first assignments was to supply roof windows for a number of school buildings converting attic floors into classrooms. With this assignment he researched how the dark, empty attics can be transformed into bright rooms. His vision was to "build a skylight - a skylight - that is as good as the best vertical window". The result was the first “Velux” roof window: The word Velux is derived from VE for ventilation and LUX (Latin for light). Villum Kann Rasmussen patented this idea in 1942.

Villum Can Rasmussen

In 1952, Villum Kann Rasmussen, with the help of a German-speaking employee, founded a partnership with Ernst Günter Albers, the owner of the E. Albers & v. Joinery. Drathen (ALDRA) in Meldorf , Schleswig-Holstein. Together they founded the Velux GmbH construction accessories in Hamburg. The first Velux roof window was sold in Germany on May 5, 1952; In June 1952, the first fifty windows were manufactured by Aldra in Meldorf.

From 1956 West Germany became the Velux Group's largest market. The Velux Group expanded into 12 countries by 1965 and grew from around 300 to more than a thousand employees by the early 1970s. In the following years the logistics were improved and local sales and production companies were set up in other countries.

In 1992 Villum Kann Rasmussen's eldest son, Lars Kann-Rasmussen, born in 1964, took over the management of V. Kann Rasmussen Industrie - the parent company of the Velux Group. Since 1968 he has held managerial positions in the group of companies. Villum died in 1993 at the age of 84. Over the next few decades, Lars Kann-Rasmussen developed, modernized and expanded the Velux Group into an international company. At the beginning of the 21st century, the Velux Group employed more than 10,000 people at production sites in 11 countries and sales companies in over 40 countries.

VKR group and foundations

Villum Kann Rasmussen founded today's VKR Group as early as 1941. This includes the Velux Group with all Velux international sales and production companies. "The Velux Foundations", consisting of Villum Fonden and Velux Fonden, are non-profit foundations. Villum Fonden was founded in 1971, Velux Fonden in 1981. Both foundations were established by Villum Kann Rasmussen. Your funding areas support scientific, ecological, social and cultural projects. There are a total of six different foundations, including those for the USA. The Velux Foundation was established in Switzerland in 1980.

Velux Germany GmbH

Villum Fonden became the main shareholder and owner of the VKR Group. The Velux Group's profits are therefore largely used and donated as funds from the Villum Fund. In 2018, Villum funds granted 83 million euros and Velux funds granted 35 million euros. In 2019, grants totaling around 178 million euros were awarded.

Products

The company's development was based on two basic roof window models. The original GGL model has a central suspension of the rotating window; the TPS model developed in 1982 has the above suspension. Both types of center pivot windows can be cleaned from the inside on both sides.
