Handball Bundesliga 1988/89

The handball Bundesliga 1989/90 was the 13th of the single-track seasons and the 24th season of the highest German division in men's handball in the history of the handball Bundesliga . The season began on September 30, 1989 and ended with the last game day on March 10, 1990.

14 teams played for the German championship. For the first time, the German handball champion was played in play-offs , to which the best eight teams of the season qualified. The winner of the final was German Champion 1990. The new season's promoters were TV 08 Niederwürzbach , TuS Schutterwald and DSC Wanne-Eickel . In addition, the DHB Cup was played for the 16th time.

German champion in 1990 was the team of TV Großwallstadt for the sixth time in the club's history . Although the team was only fourth after 26 matchdays, they prevailed in the play-offs and became champions.

For the only time in the history of the handball Bundesliga, the three relegated teams were determined through play-downs between the last six teams of the season. On the one hand, SG Weiche-Handewitt , which played as SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the coming season, had to relegate from the handball Bundesliga to the 2nd Bundesliga . ETSV Weiche left the syndicate and it was dissolved. The Handewitter SV and the TSB Flensburg merged to SG Flensburg-Handewitt. Furthermore, the HSG TuRU Düsseldorf and the DSC Wanne-Eickel had to relegate.

In 182 games - not including play-offs and play-downs - a total of 7,213 goals (average 39.6 per game) were scored one less goal than in the 1988/89 season . There were 120 home wins, 24 draws and 38 away wins. The highest home win was recorded by THW Kiel on matchday 18 with 33:22 against VfL Fredenbeck . The highest away win was also achieved by the THW Kiel team on matchday 25 with 18:26 at HSG TuRU Düsseldorf . The highest-scoring game took place on matchday 7 between TSV Milbertshofen and DSC Wanne-Eickel and ended in a 28:28 draw. That was 16 goals more than the overall average. Three clubs were at the top of the table during the season: TV Großwallstadt (2 ×), TuS Schutterwald (3 ×) and TUSEM Essen (21 ×). The top scorer was Andreas Dörhöfer from VfL Gummersbach with 178 goals scored .

The team of TSV Milbertshofen secured the DHB Cup, which was played for the 15th time .
