The Handball Bundesliga 2008/09 (full name after the main sponsor Toyota Handball Bundesliga 2008/09 ) was the 31st of the single-track seasons and the 43rd season of the highest German division in men's handball in the history of the Bundesliga . The season began on September 2, 2008 and ended with the last game day on June 6, 2009.
18 teams played for the German championship. The first in the table on the last day of the game is German champions 2009. The new season was promoted by Stralsund HV and TSV Dormagen . In addition, the DHB Cup was played for the 35th time.
German champion 2009 was the 15th time in the club's history the team of THW Kiel , which had also been autumn champion.
HSG Nordhorn-Lingen and TUSEM Essen were relegated from the Bundesliga - both due to bankruptcy - to the 2nd Bundesliga and Stralsund HV due to license withdrawal and insolvency in the upper league . The HSG Nordhorn-Lingen was also deducted four points at the end of the season because of a license violation.
In 306 games, a total of 18,150 goals (average 59.3 per game) were scored, around 0.3 goals more than in the 2007/08 season . There were 177 home wins, 21 draws and 108 away wins. HSV Hamburg recorded their highest home win on matchday 34 with 43:16 against Stralsund HV . The highest away win was achieved by the THW Kiel team on matchday 10 with 22:43 at the Stralsund AGM. The game with the highest number of goals took place on matchday 14 between the Rhein-Neckar Löwen and the THW Kiel and ended 40:42. That was 22 goals more than the overall average. Five clubs were at the top of the table during the season: Frisch Auf Göppingen (1 ×), SG Flensburg-Handewitt (1 ×), SC Magdeburg (2 ×), TBV Lemgo (3 ×) and THW Kiel (27 ×). The top scorer was Savas Karipidis from MT Melsungen with 282/116 goals .
The THW Kiel team secured the DHB Cup, which was played for the 35th time .
Eight German teams also competed in European competitions, with the VfL Gummersbach the EHF Cup 2008/09 secured.
Thierry Omeyer was voted player of the season by managers and directors of the league.

Since HSG Nordhorn-Lingen and TUSEM Essen were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga - both due to insolvency - and the Stralsund HV due to license withdrawal and insolvency, the relegation was suspended.

DHB Cup
The team from THW Kiel won the DHB Cup 2008/09 . In the final on May 10, 2009 in the Color Line Arena in Hamburg in front of 13,000 spectators, she defeated the VfL Gummersbach team with 30:24 (15:12).
