The handball Bundesliga 1997/98 was the 20th of the single-track seasons and the 32nd season of the highest German division in men's handball in the history of the Bundesliga . The season began on September 12, 1997 and ended with the last game day on May 3, 1998.
16 teams played for the German championship. The first in the table on the last day of the match is German champions 1998. The new season's promoters were HSG LTV / WSV Wuppertal and ThSV Eisenach . In addition, the DHB Cup was played for the 24th time.
The German champion in 1998 was the THW Kiel team for the seventh time in the club's history .
In addition to OSC 04 Rheinhausen , which withdrew its team after the 15th matchday, the teams of SG VfL / BHW Hameln and TSV Bayer Dormagen had to relegate to the 2nd Bundesliga . The games played up to then with Rheinhausen participation were canceled. For the fourth time in the history of the Bundesliga after 1974/75 , 1975/76 and 1996/97 , relegation games were played: The second division TuS Schutterwald was able to prevail and was promoted to the first Bundesliga.
In the 208 rated games, a total of 10,521 goals (average 50.6 per game) were scored, around 1.4 goals more than in the 1996/97 season . There were 151 home wins, 20 draws and 69 away wins, including table ranking. The home games of SG VfL / BHW Hameln against TUSEM Essen (32:30) and VfL Gummersbach (23:19) were scored 0-0 goals and 2-0 points for the visiting team due to the use of a Hamelin player who was not eligible to play. These games are not included in the goal statistics. The HSG LTV / WSV Wuppertal recorded the highest home win on matchday 1 with 36:23 against ThSV Eisenach . The highest away win was achieved by the TuS Nettelstedt team on matchday 2 with 25:33 at ThSV Eisenach. The game with the highest number of goals took place on the 4th matchday between THW Kiel and SG VfL / BHW Hameln and ended 35:32. That was 16 goals more than the overall average. Three clubs were at the top of the table during the season: HSG LTV / WSV Wuppertal (1 ×), TBV Lemgo (3 ×) and THW Kiel (26 ×). The top scorer was Stéphane Stoecklin from TSV GWD Minden with 207 goals scored .
The THW Kiel team also secured the DHB Cup, which was played for the 24th time .
In addition, THW Kiel won the EHF Cup and TuS Nettelstedt the City Cup .
