The handball Bundesliga 1988/89 was the twelfth of the single-track seasons and the total of the 23rd season of the highest German division in men's handball in the history of the handball Bundesliga . The season began on September 10, 1988 and ended with the last game day on April 30, 1989.

14 teams played for the German championship. The first in the table on the last day of the match was German champions 1989. New season promoters were SG Weiche-Handewitt , VfL Fredenbeck and SG Leutershausen . In addition, the DHB Cup was played for the 15th time.

The German champion in 1989 was the TUSEM Essen team for the third time in the club's history .

DHB Cup

The team from TV Großwallstadt won the DHB Cup in 1988/89 . She defeated VfL Gummersbach 21:18 and 21:21 (overall 42:39) in the final after a two-way leg on May 20 and 24, 1988 .
