Handball Bundesliga 1997/98

The 1998/99 handball Bundesliga was the 21st of the single-track seasons and the 33rd season of the highest German division in men's handball in the history of the Bundesliga . The season began on September 12, 1998 and ended with the last game day on May 2, 1999.

16 teams played for the German championship. The first in the table on the last day of the match is German champions 1999. The newcomers to the new season were HSG Dutenhofen / Münchholzhausen , VfL Bad Schwartau and TuS Schutterwald . In addition, the DHB Cup was played for the 25th time.

The German champion in 1999 was the THW Kiel team for the eighth time in the club's history .

Since the 1999/2000 season of the Bundesliga started with 18 teams, no team had to be relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . The TV Niederwürzbach withdrew its team to the regional association area at the end of the season. Relegation games were played for the fifth time in the history of the Bundesliga after 1974/75 , 1975/76 , 1996/97 and 1997/98 : The first division TuS Schutterwald was able to assert itself against the second division SG VfL / BHW Hameln and remained in the first division .

In 240 games, a total of 11,768 goals (average 49 per game) were scored, about 1.4 fewer goals than in the 1997/98 season . There were 159 home wins, 21 draws and 60 away wins. The highest home win was recorded by THW Kiel on matchday 1 with 36:13 against HC Wuppertal . The TBV Lemgo team achieved the highest away win on matchday 12 with 19:38 at TuS Schutterwald . The game with the highest number of goals took place on matchday 25 between THW Kiel and VfL Bad Schwartau and ended 39:29. That was 19 goals more than the overall average. Five clubs were at the top of the table during the season: TuS Nettelstedt (1 ×), TSV GWD Minden (1 ×), TBV Lemgo (6 ×), SG Flensburg-Handewitt (10 ×), and THW Kiel (12 ×) . The top scorer was Yoon Kyung-shin from VfL Gummersbach with goals scored 228/27 .

The THW Kiel team also secured the DHB Cup, which was played for the 25th time .

In addition, SC Magdeburg won the EHF Cup and SG Flensburg-Handewitt the City Cup .
