The handball Bundesliga 1978/79 was the second of the single-track seasons and the 13th season of the highest German division in men's handball in the history of the handball Bundesliga . The season began on September 9, 1978 and ended with the last game day on May 26, 1979.

14 teams played for the German championship. The first in the table on the 26th matchday was German champions 1979. Newcomers to the new season were SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen , TV Grambke-Bremen (successors, as MTV Herzhorn decided not to start in the 1st Bundesliga for financial reasons) and TSV 1896 Rintheim and the TSV Jahn Gensungen . In addition, the DHB Cup was played for the fifth time.

German champion in 1979 was the team from TV Großwallstadt for the second time in the club's history.

OSC 04 Rheinhausen , SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen , TSV 1896 Rintheim and TSV Jahn Gensungen had to relegate from the handball Bundesliga to the regional leagues .

In 182 games, a total of 6117 goals (average 33.6 per game) were 0.2 fewer than in the 1977/78 season . There were 116 home wins, 21 draws and 45 away wins. TuS Nettelstedt recorded the highest home win on the second match day with 28:11 against TV Grambke-Bremen. The highest away win was achieved by TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen on matchday 24 with 9:22 at OSC 04 Rheinhausen. The highest-scoring game took place on the fourth match day between TuS Nettelstedt and OSC 04 Rheinhausen and ended 29:18. That was 14 goals more than the overall average. Three clubs were at the top of the table during the season: VfL Gummersbach (2 ×), TuS Hofweier (8 ×) and TV Großwallstadt (16 ×). The top scorer was Arno Ehret from TuS Hofweier with 152 goals .

The team from TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen secured the DHB Cup, which was played for the fifth time.

The TV Großwallstadt also secured the European Champion Clubs 'Cup and VfL Gummersbach won the European Cup Winners' Cup again after 1977/78 .

The team from TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen won the 1979 DHB Cup . She defeated the THW Kiel in the final game on June 8, 1979 in the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle in Hamburg in front of about 4,300 spectators with 19:14.
