The 1976/77 season of the handball Bundesliga is the eleventh of the double-track seasons in its history .

20 teams played in two seasons of ten teams each for the German championship in 1977. The game for the championship had been preceded by a semifinals since the 1969/70 season , for which the first and second teams in the North and South relays after the 18th matchday qualified. The winners from the semi-finals competed against each other in a final. The winner was German champion 1977. New season promoters were TSG Oßweil , TuS Eintracht Wiesbaden , TuS Nettelstedt and TV Grambke Bremen . In addition, the DHB Cup was played for the third time.

The German champions in 1977 were for the second time in the club's history the team of TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen , who defeated the first place in the south season, TV Großwallstadt , in the final.

The first six teams of both seasons qualified directly for the single-track Bundesliga introduced for the 1977/78 season. In detail, these were the teams of the clubs Frisch Auf Göppingen , OSC 04 Rheinhausen , SG Dietzenbach , THW Kiel , TuS Derschlag 1881 , TuS Hofweier , TuS Nettelstedt , TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen , TSV Milbertshofen , TV Großwallstadt , TV 05/07 Hüttenberg and VfL Gummersbach . With two other teams from the regional leagues, this now started with 14 teams.

The Reinickendorfer Füchse , the SC Phönix Essen 1920 , the SG Leutershausen , the TSG Oßweil , the TSV 1896 Rintheim , the TuS Eintracht Wiesbaden , the TuS 05 Wellinghofen and the TV Grambke Bremen had to relegate from the handball Bundesliga .

The DHB Cup, which was played for the third time, was won by the VfL Gummersbach team .
