Rainer Niemeyer (born May 11, 1955 in Minden ; † May 8, 2016 there ) was a German handball player and coach . The goalkeeper became world champion in 1978.

Career

His career began at TuS Südhemmern. He played for Grün-Weiß Dankersen , TuS Nettelstedt , OSC Dortmund and TBV Lemgo .

In total, Rainer Niemeyer played 232 games in the single-track Bundesliga , which was introduced in 1977: 175 between 1977 and 1985 for TSV GWD Minden , 48 between 1985 and 1987 for OSC Dortmund and nine in the 1987/88 season for TBV Lemgo .

Rainer Niemeyer became world champion in 1978 . For the German men's national handball team , he completed a total of 56 international matches from 1976 to 1983, in which he scored one goal.

Trainer

Since March 13, 2003 he was trainer of the GWD Minden on the initiative of GWD manager Horst Bredemeier . From 2007 he was a coach at the women's second division HSG Stemmer / Friedewalde .

Private

Niemeyer was a teacher for the disabled by profession. His son Arne Niemeyer is also a handball player.
