The gymnastics and sports club Grün-Weiß Dankersen-Minden e. V. ( TSV GWD Minden for short , GWD Minden or GWD ) is a sports club from the East Westphalian city of Minden in North Rhine-Westphalia , which is best known for the success of its handball division . The game operations of the Bundesliga team, which was one of the founding members under the name TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen at the time and currently plays in the handball Bundesliga , has been outsourced to GWD Minden Handball-Bundesliga GmbH & Co. KG . In the Eternal Bundesliga table she is currently in ninth place. The number of members is 746. Curiously, the club was a founding member in all of the national men's division newly established or single-track division.

Club history

1924 to 1926 - The foundation of the association

On May 31, 1924, the Chr. Piepenbrink inn in Dankersen - a town with around 5000 inhabitants ( a district of Minden since the territorial reform in 1973 ) - held the founding meeting of a German gymnastics association. During the meeting, 45 male members joined the initially pure gymnastics club. A provisional board was elected, chaired by Anton Buhrmester. On June 20, the members determined the club colors green and white and the club name "Turnverein Deutsche Eiche Dankersen DT ". The association was officially recognized on November 26th with the approval of the adopted statutes by the Minden District Court .

History of the handball department

1926 to 1945 - The early years of the association, the Nazi era and World War II

It has not yet been definitively clarified when exactly handball began at TV Eiche . In the summer of 1927 at the latest, however, a youth team took part in the game for the first time. The men started in the 1928/29 season in the district league and reached the promotion game to the Gau class by taking first place in the table, which was however lost 4: 6 against MTV Minden II. Due to a reallocation of the game classes due to the increasing number of registrations, a decision game against TV Jahn Minden II became necessary. The promotion was achieved through a 3-2 win. In the Gau class, the relay win was won again. The following round of promotion to the master class was not successfully contested. After a second place in the 1930/31 season, the promotion worked a season later with a 5-3 win against TV Altenhagen and thus the 1932/33 season was played in the master class.

With the seizure of power by the National Socialists and the associated establishment of professional associations, the German Gymnastics Association lost the handball championship to the German Sports Authority for Athletics . There was a dispute over competence, which the two associations only ended in mid-September 1933 when they agreed to hold joint championships. Although the Minden-Ravensberger gymnastics district in its division had still assigned the TV Eiche to the master class, the place in the top division was lost due to a reorganization of the divisions and was placed in the district class. In the 1933/34 season, relegation could be prevented.

The next four years went better. Two second places were followed by two relay victories. In the seasons 1936/37 and 1937/38 one did not reach the required second place in the East Westphalian district championships in order to participate in the promotion games. In the last season before the outbreak of war , TV Eiche finished fourth. After that, game operations came to a complete standstill. Individual attempts to hold a championship failed again and again due to the many Wehrmacht conscription of young men. At the end of October 1941, what was probably the last championship game before 1946 was lost against TuS Minderheide with 3:11.

1945 to 1961 - TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen

After the Second World War , the association was re-established on October 21, 1945. Since the name “Eiche” could no longer be used, the new club name TSV G rün- W eiss D ankersen (GWD) was chosen on April 6, 1946 during a monthly meeting .

1961 to 1980 - championships in field and indoor handball, national and international cup victories

Field handball

Between 1921 and 1975 there were field handball championships in Germany . In the 1960s, Grün-Weiß Dankersen played very successfully for the championship. The club was part of the field handball league introduced in 1967 in six of the seven summer seasons of its existence. In the 1967 season , after three runners-up championships, TSV also succeeded in winning the final and becoming German field handball champions, the first German championship title in the club's history. Two more titles followed in 1970 and 1971. After the end of the 1972 season , however, Green-White withdrew from field handball. In the years 1968 to 1970 they were the only team to win the European field handball cup . In all three events one remained without losing points.

Indoor handball

As the Westphalia champion in 1966, GWD only qualified through the intermediate round of the West German championship as one of four clubs from the West German AGM for the newly created Bundesliga. In the northern relay of the two-track league, a rivalry with VfL Gummersbach immediately developed . In the eleven years of double-track work, GWD came first twice and second six times (always behind Gummersbach) and was always among the top four teams. In 1971, a 14:10 (10: 4) success in the final against TV Großwallstadt won the German championship. In 1975 and 1976, GWD was the German runner-up for the final of the DHB Cup , which was newly created in 1975 , and qualified both times for the European Cup Winners' Cup (a 'real' cup round has only been played since the 1976/77 season). In 1977 GWD was again in the final against TV Großwallstadt (21:20) for the second time German indoor handball champions and thus went into the first single-track Bundesliga season as defending champions.

1980 to 1995 - Two descents, two re-ascents, TSV GWD Minden

For the first time, GWD had to relegate to the 2nd Bundesliga after the 1980/81 season . But just a year later, GWD was back in the first division. Another relegation took place in the 1985/86 season . After nine years, GWD Minden was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga in the 1994/95 season . On November 2, 1985 there was another name change to TSV GWD Minden , as it was hoped that this would generate greater interest from the sponsors .

1995 to 2002 - Big investments, near bankruptcy and disappointments

The first year after the promotion under the new coach Jürgen Kloth was largely calm. With a good start to the season and victories against the three top teams in the league (at home against THW Kiel and TBV Lemgo , away at SG Flensburg-Handewitt ), the foundation stone was laid early on for relegation. It was already apparent in the first half of the season that the two relegated teams would be called HSV Düsseldorf and VfL Bad Schwartau . GWD was able to plan early for another year in the Bundesliga and push transfer activities.

Vlado Šola

In December 1995 the European Court of Justice (ECJ) passed the so-called Bosman judgment , which was supposed to change the world of professional sport overnight. The restrictions on foreigners in clubs for players from the EU no longer existed and laid the foundation for the best handball players in the world to play in Germany from now on. The German Bundesliga clubs agreed to end the 1995/96 season with only one foreign player each. But GWD Minden ignored this agreement and immediately signed the Croatian goalkeeper Vlado Šola . This made Šola the first handball player to benefit from the Bosman ruling. While many top clubs in particular were hesitant to deal with the new regulation in the following season, because they either did not want to endanger their salary structure or saw no need, the management of Minden around Günter Horn and Hans Moog went on the offensive again and signed a number of top foreign players like Johan Petersson , Sigurður Bjarnason , Tomislav Farkaš and Stéphane Stoecklin . As a new trainer they also presented the Pole Zenon Łakomy .

In the 1996/97 season , from the Stamm-Sieben, only circle runner Andreas Bock had a German passport. This fact pushed the rest of the league initially rejected and quickly made a new association of the abbreviation GWD ( G Disp w enig D eutsche) the round. The stars hoped to be able to cover the financial expenses with sporting success. The sporting success failed to materialize. At the end of the season there was even a slight risk of relegation.

GWD only really made people sit up and take notice twice. On the one hand at the away game in Kiel's Ostseehalle , when they were leading with eight goals shortly before the break, but still lost in the end. On the other hand, at the away game in Magdeburg's time-honored Hermann-Gieseler-Halle , when SC Magdeburg suffered the highest home defeat in the club's history with 23:32.

Horst Bredemeier

The debt grew to around 2.8 million Deutschmarks. In addition to the financial disaster, manager Moog also got caught up in a power struggle with goalkeeper and crowd favorite Chrischa Hannawald , at the end of which Hannawald switched to HSG LTV / WSV Wuppertal . The Moog / Horn duo was replaced by Horst Bredemeier as manager and Jürgen Riechmann as managing director. GWD was close to bankruptcy and was saved by guarantees. A long-term debt relief concept was initiated.

Stéphane Stoecklin was elected world handball player in 1997 during his time in Minden and top scorer in the Bundesliga in the 1997/98 season . Then he accepted a lucrative offer from Honda Suzuka in Japan.

Despite the financial problems, Bredemeier managed to continue to put together a nominally powerful team and to sign renowned players such as Magnus Andersson , Aaron Ziercke , Martin Frändesjö , Alexander Tutschkin and, last but not least, the two-time world handball player Talant Dujshebaev from the district rival TuS Nettelstedt . At that time, the club was one of the secret favorites for the championship among experts. But more than one place in the upper midfield was never achieved and the European Cup places were missed in a row.

This was also due to the fact that there were still scandals and bad luck with injuries. Tutschkin was involved in a car accident under the influence of alcohol, survived seriously injured and was absent for almost half a year. Dujshebaev was for a day on suspicion of tax evasion trial detention taken. He had also been sidelined for several months with a foot injury.

The only success stories were two participations in the DHB Cup - Final Four in the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle in Hamburg in 2000 and 2001 . Both times, however, GWD failed in the semi-finals. The year 2001 was particularly disappointing because, for once, no well-known teams had made it into the semi-finals and Minden was the favorite in the game against HSG D / M Wetzlar , but was already back at half-time with a 10:17. The race to catch up in the second round was no longer crowned with success and you lost just under 27:28.

2002 to 2009 - Constant relegation battle, interlude in Hanover, “Miracle of Flensburg” and debt relief

After problems with the composition of the budget for the 2004/05 season , an agreement was reached with the operators of the TUI Arena in Hanover (at that time still Preussag-Arena) that GWD Minden would transfer almost half of its Bundesliga games from the domestic Kampa-Halle in Minden to Hanover relocated. In return, the TUI Arena financed a large part of the budget. Minden had already played their top games in Hanover in the previous season.

The Bundesliga team of TSV GWD Minden was officially renamed GWD Minden-Hannover. All other teams GWDs continued to play as TSV GWD Minden. However, the games of GWD Minden-Hannover mostly met with little interest from the Hanoverian public.

In September 2005 there were disputes between the management of GWD Minden-Hannover and the owner of the TUI Arena , Günter Papenburg . Papenburg stopped making payments to GWD Minden-Hannover. He accused the Mindenern of not using his money for a competitive team. GWD then terminated the contract with the arena and is now playing all games in Minden again. In addition, the addition to the name “Hanover” was deleted, so that the professional team is now again called GWD Minden, while the TSV can only be found in the name of the parent club.

One of the highlights of the years in which GWD fought for relegation every season was the most dramatic final in the relegation battle in Bundesliga history (besides the 2018/19 season ) in the 2007/08 season . On the penultimate match day they lost in the derby TuS N-Lübbecke in front of a domestic backdrop. They were still on the relegation place, but while GWD was the big favorite and already established runner-up SG Flensburg-Handewitt on the last day of the game , the direct rivals TUSEM Essen (against MT Melsungen ) and Lübbecke (against Füchse Berlin ) Cope with home games against teams from mid-table. So it was clear to the people of Minden that only a victory in Flensburg would be enough to reach the relegation. This seemed almost impossible due to the previous season in combination with an extreme Minden weakness away from home (1:31 points).

But on this last day of play everything seemed to be going well for GWD. They quickly took the lead and even expanded it, so that at halftime it even seemed possible to stay in the league. Lübbecke was at the same time behind, in Essen it was a draw. But in the second round, Minden's lead melted and the other halls became increasingly narrow. A few minutes before the end, the scores in all three relevant games were close or drawn. Each hit brought a completely new table constellation with it. Lübbecke finally managed to win, Essen achieved a draw. It was clear that Minden would only be helped by a win. With a score of 28:29 for GWD, Flensburg had the great opportunity to equalize nine seconds before the end. Thomas Mogensen was free, but goalkeeper Malik Beširević held his throw and steered the ball with his heel out of the goal. When the news of the Essen draw against Melsungen became known, they actually managed to stay in the league. Minden, Essen and Lübbecke were tied at the end of the season. Only the goal difference decided on relegation (Minden), relegation (Essen) and relegation (Lübbecke). To mark the return of the team in the late evening, the fans organized a spontaneous celebration and from then on they spoke only of the “miracle of Flensburg”.

The rest of the league - above all TuS N-Lübbecke and TUSEM Essen who suffered - sometimes even spoke quite clearly of fraud or at least of distortion of competition by the Flensburgers. The results from Flensburg also sparked controversial discussions on the Internet, which did not stop even months later.

The following 2008-09 season was the best under coach Richard Ratka . Relegation was certainly achieved.

2009 to the present day - “elevator team” and 90th anniversary

In the 2009/10 season GWD rose from bottom of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Ratka was sacked after just one win in February and replaced by the Swede Ulf Schefvert . But even under his leadership, the team only managed one more victory.

After relegation, Minden was the clear favorite for promotion in the 2010/11 season . But it was only the runner-up in the northern relay of the 2nd handball Bundesliga. In the subsequent relegation to the promotion, they failed on the runner-up of the southern season TV Hüttenberg . A year later they became champions in 2012 in the first season of the single-track 2nd Bundesliga and rose again to the 1st league.

After a successful start in the first half of the Bundesliga season 2012/13 , two defeats away from the direct rivals TV Neuhausen and TUSEM Essen worsened Minden's position in the relegation battle. In March, the club's management was forced to remove coach Schefvert of his office and presented Sead Hasanefendić as his successor. Under him the necessary points to stay in the league were obtained. GWD Minden made Hasanefendić an offer to continue the collaboration. However, he refused and took over the Tunisian national team .

The Croatian Goran Perkovac was presented as the new GWD coach for the 2013/14 season , who terminated his contract with the Swiss national team for this commitment . Minden managed to stay up again, also because you no longer had to rely on your home strength. On March 1, an almost five-year long 46-game lean period in Bundesliga away games ended with a 24:20 win at Bergischer HC .

For the 90th anniversary of the club, FC Barcelona accepted an invitation from GWD Minden and took part in a friendship and charity game in the Kampa Hall on August 19, 2014 for the benefit of the José Carreras Leukemia Foundation. Minden led for a long time and in the meantime by seven goals. In the end, however, Barcelona prevailed with 31:30 (14:19). In February 2015, coach Goran Perkovac was dismissed after slipping to 18th place in the table and replaced by Frank Carstens . Shortly before, speculation had already flared up that the change to the new season should have already been made. But even with Carstens, the points needed to stay in the league could not be earned and GWD had to relegate from the Bundesliga for the fourth time. The main reason for this was the extreme fluctuations in performance during the season. High victories against favored opponents like Füchse Berlin , HSV Hamburg or SC Magdeburg were followed by defeats with serious consequences against direct competitors like TBV Lemgo , HBW Balingen-Weilstetten , Bergische HC or SG BBM Bietigheim . An application for the issuance of a temporary injunction for provisional approval for the game operation of the handball Bundesliga before the regional court in Dortmund changed nothing. GWD resisted the rating as relegated. The application was rejected on June 25th. On June 30, GWD Minden announced that it would not appeal any further.

The 2. Bundesliga started in the 2015/16 season with 21 teams. Each team had to play 40 games. GWD was able to celebrate promotion on the fourth last match day. With four points behind HC Erlangen , the second place in the table was occupied.

In the 2016/17 season, relegation could be safely achieved as twelfth in the table. On March 26, GWD Minden was only the fifth club to play its 1000th Bundesliga game. The home game against Bergische HC was won with 27:22.

History of the other departments of the club

In addition to the handball department as today's flagship of the club, there are also other sports departments that have helped shape the history of the TSV and still exist today.

do gymnastics

The gymnastics was motivation for the founding of the association in 1924 and formed the basis for the later successes of the handball players.

volleyball

The volleyball department has existed since September 22, 1975 and joined the West German Volleyball Association on October 1, 1976.

Judo

Halls

District sports hall / Kampa hall

The Kampa Hall in Minden has existed in its current form as a multifunctional hall since 1999. It owes its name to the private sponsor Kampa , who supported the renovation financially. Since then, it has had a capacity of around 4,057 spectators (3,457 seats and 600 standing places) for handball games. From 1970 to 1999 it was called the Kreissporthalle and at maximum capacity offered around 2,600 spectators. At that time, the hall only had a spectator stand on one side in the south, but this was very high and at its highest point was well above the ceiling height above the playing field. This peculiarity gave it a very concise external appearance, which is still recognizable today. After the modernization and the expansion with an additional grandstand in the north, which also rises above the ceiling height in the middle, the hall now has a more symmetrical appearance. For the spectators, however, it means major disadvantages, since from the highest point of the two stands you can only see the bottom rows of the opposite stands. The lower hall ceiling above the playing field therefore not only obstructs the view. It is also an obstacle in terms of good acoustics .

The Kampa hall is due to be closed on December 31, 2019 due to fire protection deficiencies, so that GWD Minden is without a venue for the Bundesliga handball for the first time. For the second half of the 2019/20 season, GWD is moving to the Merkur Arena , the hall of Kreisrvalen TuS N-Lübbecke , and is looking for a temporary solution for the 2020/21 season. A multifunctional hall on the eastern bank of the Weser is under discussion for the time after that.

Preussag Arena / TUI Arena

The TUI Arena hosted eight home games in the 2004/05 season . In the following season only the first home game took place in Hanover before the dispute with operator Günter Papenburg escalated . At the beginning of the cooperation, the hall was still called Preussag Arena, before the name was changed in autumn 2004. It had a capacity of around 10,500 spectators at the handball games.

Dankersen sports hall

The sports hall in the Dankersen district of Minden is used by all reserve and youth teams for their training and match operations and offers space for around 400 spectators.

The band zero / zero dedicated the following line of text to GWD Minden in their song Minden from 2011:

“You are loyal!
Your green blood pulsates in your veins,
whether you are second or first: Always behind the squad! "

and is to be understood as an allusion to the association with the club regardless of its league affiliation.

The rapper Trauma mentions GWD in his song Mi, myself and I from 2018:

“Save yourself the laughter!
Spitten like the Weserspucker - GWD and hits! "

Outfitter

GWD Minden has been exclusively equipped by hummel since 1964 and has since played in articles from the now Danish company.

POOL 100

On August 3, 1989, the association presented the Pro GWD - Concept 2000 project at a specially convened press conference . The GWD POOL 100 was an essential part of this project and is still considered a recipe for success - contrary to the trend that has now set in - for the maintenance of Bundesliga handball in Minden away from the big cities. A year earlier, parts of the club's management were inspired by the second division soccer club Eintracht Braunschweig and its Eintracht POOL 100 . The final establishment of the POOL 100 Sportwerbung Bundesliga GbR took place on October 1st.

Since July 1, 2014, the GWD POOL 100 has been integrated into the GWD Minden Handball-Bundesliga GmbH & Co. KG as an economically and organizationally independent profit center for liability and tax reasons .
