The handball Bundesliga 1979/80 was the third of the single-track seasons and the 14th season of the highest German division in men's handball in the history of the handball Bundesliga . The season began on September 8, 1979 and ended with the last game day on May 3, 1980.

14 teams played for the German championship. The first in the table on the 26th matchday was German champions 1980. Promoted to the new season were the TUSEM Essen , the SG Dietzenbach , the TSB Flensburg and the TSV Birkenau . In addition, the DHB Cup was played for the sixth time.

The German champion in 1980 was the team from TV Großwallstadt for the third time in the club's history .

Only three teams instead of four had to relegate from the handball Bundesliga to the regional leagues this season, specifically TV Grambke Bremen , TSB Flensburg and TSV Birkenau .
