The 1972/73 season of the handball Bundesliga is the seventh of the two-pronged seasons in its history .

16 teams played in two seasons of eight teams each for the German championship in 1973. The game for the championship has been preceded by a semi-final since the 1969/70 season , for which the first and second teams in the north and south seasons after the 14th matchday qualified. The winners from the semi-finals competed against each other in a final. The winner is the 1973 German champion. The new season's promoters were TV 05/07 Hüttenberg and TV Grambke Bremen .

German champion 1973 was the fourth time in the club's history the team of VfL Gummersbach , which defeated the defending champion and winner of the season south, Frisch Auf Göppingen , in the final. The Spvgg 1887 Möhringen and the THW Kiel had to dismount .
