The SC Phönix Essen 1920 eV is a sports club from Essen with around 700 members.
history
The club was founded in 1920 when a group of young men played football on Rüdesheimer Platz . They called their club Sport Club Adler Essen-West .
In 1924 the club was accepted into the West German Game Association (WSV). The club was renamed SC Phönix Essen, named after the former Phönix brewery (later Stern brewery or Stauder brewery). The club colors became green and black.
In 1933 a handball department was founded. From 1970 to 1977 the handball players played in the first Bundesliga . During these years, the SC Phönix always placed between fifth and seventh place. In the 1976/77 season SC Phoenix Essen was bottom of the table and was relegated. In the 2013/14 season the handball players play in the district league.
The first men's soccer team was relegated to the district league A in 2013. Four years later, the rise succeeded.
Other departments
In addition to the football and handball department , a tennis department was founded in 1963 . A year later a gymnastics department was opened and there has been a volleyball department since 1981 .
