The Stern-Brauerei was a beer brewery in the southern district of Essen , which was founded in 1872 as Actien-Bierbrauerei in Essen an der Ruhr and closed in 1989. Today the beer is brewed in the private Jacob Stauder brewery in Altenessen and sold under the old brand name Stern .

history

The company produced the bottom-fermented beers Export and Pils , and the top-fermenting power Malt , also malt , ice, dry marc and malt sprouts.

The company was founded as Actien-Bierbrauerei in Essen an der Ruhr on February 19, 1872. The founders were the entrepreneurs and city councilors Fritz Funke and Johann Wilhelm Schürenberg , the entrepreneur Ewald Hilger , the businessman Gustav Hicking and the banker Ludwig von Born . The construction of the brewery was carried out by the construction company Funke & Schürenberg , which was founded by Fritz Funke and Johann Wilhelm Schürenberg.

In 1898 the Sternbrauerei Kray AG started operations in Kray through the factory owner Wilhelm Munscheid . In 1922 the Essen Actienbrauerei bought the brand. The brewery was listed on the Essen stock exchange. After its closure in 1934, trading took place on the Düsseldorf stock exchange . The industrial and secret commercial councilor Carl Funke was chairman of the supervisory board from 1890 until his death in 1912. He was followed from 1919 to 1932 and again in 1936 by his son Fritz Funke (1888–1975). One of the directors and board members of the Actien beer brewery was Wilhelm Rasche (* 1865, † 1935), father of the world's first female stunt pilot, Thea Rasche from Essen.

In 1931 the local competitor Phönix-Brauerei GmbH , founded in Essen in 1867, was taken over. In 1932 Kronen-Brauerei AG Essen-Borbeck was taken over in Borbeck . In 1936, the Funke family, as the owners of the Essen Stern Brewery, acquired significant shares in the Dortmund Stifts Brewery . In 1939, the Stern brewery acquired the majority of shares in the Dom brewery and Hitdorfer Brauerei AG in Cologne , and the name was changed to Aktien-Brauerei Carl Funke AG .

In 1963 the name was changed to Stern Brauerei Carl Funke AG . After Stern took over the remaining 25 percent stake in the Dortmund Stifts Brewery in 1971, the complete takeover of the Dom Brewery in Cologne was completed in 1972 and the headquarters of the Stern Group relocated to Cologne.

In 1973 the Stern Brauerei Carl Funke AG was the largest brewery holding company in the Stern Group, with its major shareholders owning 15.4 million D-Marks of share capital. The major shareholders were the Funke family, Allianz-Versicherung and Commerzbank , who each held around 25 percent of Stern's capital. A little later, this total of 75 percent was taken over by the English brewery Watney-Mann .

From 1987 the Dom brewery was run as a legally independent company within the Stern Group. Also in 1987, the Dortmunder Stifts-Brauerei belonging to Stern was taken over by the private brewery Dortmunder Kronen . In 1998, the Stern Brauerei Carl Funke AG was renamed Dom-Brauerei AG in Cologne .

The Stern brewery in Essen's southern district was closed in 1989 and demolished because of the later expansion of the neighboring headquarters of the energy supplier RWE . Today the RWE tower stands on the site of the former brewery as corporate headquarters.

After Stern took over the premises of today's steam beer brewery in Borbeck in 1990, brewing activities are continued there. Two years later, the Stern brewery's brewery was installed. The steam beer brewery in Borbeck is now part of the route of industrial culture . Until December 31, 2007, the Stern brewery's range was also produced in the Stauder brewery. The advertising slogan was Stern Pils - The Pils under the good star .

Since January 1, 2008, the Essen-based family company HSE Beverage Wholesale GmbH has taken over the exclusive distribution and trademark rights for the traditional Stern brand, which will be retained. The Stern Pils and Stern Export, which continue to be brewed by Stauder, have since been sold through the company's more than 100 beverage stores. In May 2012 the design of Stern Pils and Export was changed to improve its image.
