Wilhelm Munscheid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Munscheid (born February 15, 1839 in Weitmar , † December 8, 1913 in Düsseldorf ) was a German industrialist and local councilor . At the time of industrialization, he was involved in the development of the communities of Kray and Leithe , which have been districts of Essen since 1929 .

Live and act

Wilhelm Munscheid spent his childhood on Grafenberger Allee in Weitmar, which was incorporated into Bochum in 1926 . He attended the trade school in Bochum and then worked for five years in the Grusonwerk , a shipyard and machine factory in Magdeburg . Munscheid was married to Christine Lambert (* 1847; † 1937 in Düsseldorf) and had a daughter Mathilde (* 1872 in Essen; † 1912 in Düsseldorf) and a son Wilhelm Peter Robert (* 1875 in Gelsenkirchen ; † 1975). He was a factory owner and public prosecutor in Cologne .

Wilhelm Munscheid joined the Gebr. Strassburger & Co. iron foundry in Gelsenkirchen - Ückendorf as a merchant and financier in 1865 , which had been founded four years earlier by Hermann Strassburger and his brother Johann. In addition to the Strasbourg brothers, Wilhelm Munscheid also became a partner. After Johann Strassburger left the company in 1872, Wilhelm Munscheid and Hermann Strassburger also founded the cast steel works Munscheid & Co in 1874 near the old location . After Hermann Strassburger left the company in 1885 for reasons of age, Munscheid remained the sole owner and renamed the company Wilhelm Munscheid Eisengießerei und Maschinenfabrik . In 1889, Gelsenkirchener Gussstahl- und Eisenwerke AG, formerly Munscheid & Co. was founded. Today, the Gelsenkirchen Science Park is located on this site .

Wilhelm Munscheid was also a long-time member of the local council in Kray. In neighboring Leithe, he supported road and residential construction by buying land. Due to the immigration of workers, it was of enormous importance for the expanding coal and steel industry. Munscheid acquired the Grahmann and Klüver farms and made the land available for schools and churches free of charge. He further contributed to the development of Leithe by acquiring the Brüning farm in 1896, among other things. Here he took over the development costs of the site and sold it to the community, which opened the Kray Volksgarten there a year later . Munscheid also set up the Stern Brewery , which began in Kray in 1898 as Sternbrauerei Kray AG .

Kray and the neighboring municipality of Leithe had belonged to the Altenessen mayor since 1815 and merged in 1906 to form the independent Kray-Leithe mayor. Both communities were incorporated into the city of Essen in 1929 as independent districts.

Wilhelm Munscheid is buried in the family grave of the Düsseldorf North Cemetery. His tomb is preserved there.

Honors

On May 11, 1903, Munscheidstrasse in Kray was named after Wilhelm Munscheid, which continues in the direction of Leithe. In Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf, too, a street near the industrial company, at today's science park , has had his name since 1946 .
