The RWE tower was the seat of the corporate headquarters of the energy supplier RWE in Essen . It has been the headquarters of Innogy since 2016 and RWE moved to Altenessener Straße.

architecture

The 127 meter high building (viewing platform 120 meters, antenna 162 meters) was designed by the Düsseldorf architects Ingenhoven Overdiek Kahlen & Partner . Construction began in July 1994. In December 1996 the tower was completed. Its base corresponds to a polygon with 51 corners and 32 meters in diameter. The RWE tower has three basement floors, the ground floor and 26 office floors, which together add up to 56,000 square meters. There are two technical floors between the 17th and 18th office floors. One of the total of nine elevators is outside the building. In total there are up to 500 workplaces here.

The high-rise is designed to be ecologically oriented. It enables natural ventilation between the double-glazed facade and gains natural energy from daylight and solar heat. The use of energy-storing materials also reduces load peaks.

The planners have received several awards for the RWE tower, including the NRW Architecture Prize 1998 and the CIMMIT Immobilien Award 1998 .

Connection of architecture and art

Various artists have dealt with architecture in connection with art. In the area of the employee casino and the ground floor , Lothar Baumgarten brings bizarre word creations from business, politics and culture on the walls into new contexts. The Essen artist Norbert Thomas created the stainless steel sculpture jumping line in the park behind the tower . Richard Long laid a stone sculpture called Neandertal Line , also in the park, in contrast to modern architecture. François Morellet created a sculpture for each individual floor, the shape of which varies from floor to floor.

Ownership

The building was owned by RWE until 2014. In 2014, the tower, including the ancillary buildings, was sold to the US real estate fund American Realty Capital Global Trust (ARC) , which leases the property to RWE on a long-term basis. It is a sale-lease-back or sale-rent-back transaction.
