Richard Long
Sir Richard Julian Long CBE (born June 2, 1945 in Bristol , England ) is a British land art artist.
life and work
Long studied from 1962 to 1965 at the West England College of Art in Bristol and from 1966 to 1968 at St. Martin's School of Art in London. In 1988 he was awarded the Aachen Art Prize and in 1989 the Turner Prize . In 1972 he was a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the departments Individual Mythologies : Video and Idea + Idea / Light , he was also represented as an artist at Documenta 7 in 1982. He also represented Great Britain in 1976 at the 37th Venice Biennale. In 1990 he was appointed Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government . In 2009 Long received the Praemium Imperiale .
Richard Long is a representative of Land Art . His artistic work includes conceptual wanderings in all parts of the world, which he documents with photographs and text. In the course of such hikes he creates temporary stone or wood sculptures, which are often removed after photographic documentation or left to natural weathering.
Long installs sculptures made of stones and boulders, driftwood or similar raw materials in museums and galleries . In addition, his photographs and maps with marked hiking routes are often exhibited.
Long was named a Knight Bachelor at the Queen's annual New Year ceremony in January 2018 .
