Fritz Funke was born in Essen as the son of the industrialist and secret councilor Carl Funke . He attended the Helmholtz grammar school in Essen and graduated from high school in 1908. This was followed by studies at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn .

After the death of his father in 1912, Fritz Funke took over the extensive inheritance at the age of 24. After 1930 he concentrated the family fortune entirely on the brewing industry. He became the main shareholder in the Actien beer brewery founded by his grandfather Fritz Funke in Essen, which was called Aktien-Brauerei Carl Funke AG in 1939 and, from 1963, Stern-Brauerei.
