The brewery was founded by the journeyman beer brewer and cooper from Laub in Lower Franconia , Theodor Stauder , who took over the Schlicker brewery in 1867 in what was then still a rural, but already industrially up-and-coming location, and initially brewed bottom-fermented beer. In 1888 Jacob Stauder relocated the brewery to Altenessen and had it entered under his name in the Royal Prussian Company Register. During the First World War , in the winter of 1916/1917, Caspar Stauder inherited the business, who also managed it through the Great Depression.

This was followed by his son Hans-Jacob Stauder († 1986), who brought the brewery through the turmoil of the Second World War . For the centenary in 1967 he again introduced his sons Claus and Rolf Stauder into the business. Rolf Stauder died in an accident in his house on October 23, 2004, two months before the business was handed over to his successors, Axel and Thomas Stauder.

Today's company

Since January 1, 2005 the company has been run by the sixth generation of cousins Axel and Thomas Stauder (both born in 1967). Axel Stauder studied brewing and beverage technology at the Weihenstephan University of Technology . He then earned an MBA in Spain, spending five years in Barcelona . One month younger Thomas Stauder studied marketing and finance in Münster . He has a doctorate in business administration.

Products

The brewery's current brands and products include Stauder Pils, Stauder Ruhrtyp Hell (since 2014), Stauder alcohol-free, Tut Gut Malz, Borbecker Helles Dampfbier , Borbecker salon beer , Stauder Radler (since 2007), the non-alcoholic Stauder Fassbrause lemon (since 2011) and Stauder Fassbrause Apple-Rhubarb (since 2013). Stauder Spezial was manufactured until January 31, 2014.

For the company's 150th anniversary, the Jacob anniversary beer, a dark, stronger brewed beer with 5.6 percent alcohol , has been sold since the beginning of 2017 . The beer called Helle has been on the market since April 2018 , a slightly naturally cloudy beer with 4.5 percent alcohol and a slightly fruity taste.

The Stern Pils and Stern Export brands were produced for the Stern Brewery in Essen until December 31, 2007. Since 2008, the rights for the Stern brand have been held by a beverage distributor (HSE Getränke Essen). The Stern brand beers will continue to be produced there using the so-called contract brewing process.

The beers from the private brewery Stauder can mainly be found in Essen and the Ruhr area , as well as in individual restaurants and hotels throughout Germany, such as the Berlin Adlon and some InterConti hotels.
