The 1971/72 season of the handball Bundesliga is the sixth of the double-track seasons in its history .

16 teams played in two seasons of eight teams each for the German championship in 1972. The game for the championship has been preceded by a semifinals since the 1969/70 season , for which the first and second teams of the North and South relays after the 14th matchday qualified. The winners from the semi-finals competed against each other in a final. The winner is the 1972 German Champion . The Flensburg TB and SG Dietzenbach were promoted to the new season .

The German champion in 1972 was the team from Frisch Auf Göppingen , which defeated the winner of the season south, VfL Gummersbach , in the final for the ninth time in the club's history . The newcomers Flensburger TB and TV Hochdorf had to get down .
