The 1969/70 season of the Handball Bundesliga is the fourth of the double-track seasons in its history .
16 teams played in two seasons of eight teams each for the German championship in 1970. For the first time the game for the championship was preceded by a semi-final, for which the first and second teams of the North and South teams qualified after the 14th matchday. The winners from the semi-finals competed against each other in a final. The winner is German champion 1970. New season promoters were TSV 1896 Rintheim , TV Großwallstadt , TV Oppum 1894 and VfL Bad Schwartau .
The German champions in 1970 were for the eighth time in the club's history the team from Frisch Auf Göppingen , who defeated the defending champion and winner of the North Season, VfL Gummersbach . Also for the first time this season, only one team was relegated from each season instead of the previous two. RSV Mülheim and TS Esslingen had to relegate in 1890 .
The VfL Gummersbach also won the European Champions Cup .

- Because of the tie, Hamburger SV and TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen played a deciding game in Hanover to get into the final round, which ended at 15:14. As a result, Hamburger SV moved into the semi-finals of the German championship.
