The handball Bundesliga 1990/91 was the 14th of the single-track seasons and the total of the 25th season of the highest German division in men's handball in the history of the handball Bundesliga . The season began on September 7, 1990 and ended with the last game day on March 24, 1991.
14 teams should play for the German championship. Due to German reunification , however, the first all-German handball champion was determined. In two official finals, the title was played between the master of the handball GDR Oberliga 1990/91 and the master of the "West German" handball Bundesliga 1990/91. The newcomers to the new season were SG Leutershausen , VfL Bad Schwartau and SG Stuttgart-Scharnhausen .
German champion 1991 was the twelfth time in the club's history the team of VfL Gummersbach , which had also become West German champions.
From the handball league in the 2. Bundesliga relegated had with the SG Stuttgart-Scharnhausen only one club this time. For this all twelve clubs of the GDR upper league of the German handball association of the season 1990/91 were set for the coming season. The handball Bundesliga 1991/92 started again for the first time since the handball Bundesliga season 1976/77 with a north and south seasons with 14 teams each.
In 182 games - not including play-offs - a total of 7,407 goals (average 40.7 per game) were scored 1.1 fewer than in the 1989/90 season . There were 125 home wins, 26 draws and 31 away wins. TSV Bayer Dormagen recorded the highest home win on matchday 2 with 28:14 against VfL Bad Schwartau . The highest away win was achieved by the VfL Gummersbach team on matchday 5 with 14:23 at TSV Milbertshofen . The game with the highest number of goals took place on the 1st matchday between VfL Bad Schwartau and TV Großwallstadt and ended 33:23. That was 15 goals more than the overall average. Three clubs were at the top of the table during the season: TUSEM Essen (2 ×), SG Wallau / Massenheim (10 ×) and VfL Gummersbach (14 ×). The top scorer was Jochen Fraatz from TUSEM Essen with 178 goals scored .
The TUSEM Essen team secured the DHB Cup, which was played for the 17th time . In addition, an all-German cup was played, with which the European Cup participants for the 1991/92 season was determined. This was also won by the TUSEM Essen team.
The TSV Milbertshofen secured the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup .

DHB Cup
The TUSEM Essen team won the 1990/91 DHB Cup . She defeated TV 08 Niederwürzbach in the final after a return match on March 30 and April 18, 1991 with 21:16 and 17:20 (total 38:36). In addition, an all-German cup was played, with which the European Cup participants for the 1991/92 season was determined. This was also won by the TUSEM Essen team. On June 5 and 9, 1991, she defeated HC Preußen Berlin after a return leg with 21:25 and 20:25 (41:50 in total).
