The German Handball Association (DHV) was the umbrella organization for handball clubs and gaming communities in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He organized the national game operation, including the top division, the East German Oberliga , and international competition as the East Germany national handball team and the East Germany women's national handball team .

The association was founded on June 21, 1958 in Halle (Saale) . He was the successor to the handball section of the German Gymnastics and Sports Association (DTSB). First president was from Magdeburg Dating Hermann Milius , formerly president of the section Handball of the German Gymnastics and Sports Association .

From 1980 to 1989 the handball player of the year was chosen with the participation of the DHV .

After German reunification, the DHV was divided into five regional associations at the national level, which were divided into four regional associations of the German Handball Federation (DHB): Saxony-Anhalt to the North German Handball Association , Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to the Northeast German Handball Association , Saxony to the South German Handball Association and Thuringia to the Southwest German Handball Association .

The DHV was also merged with the German Handball Federation (DHB) on the international German-German level to date . The DHV brought in the GDR national team's playing rights for the German men's national handball team , which at that time only had one right to play in the C world championship, which entitles them to participate in the A world championship.
