Hermann Milius

Hermann Milius (born April 10, 1903 in Schönebeck (Elbe) , † July 16, 1979 in Magdeburg ) was a German sports official. He was the first President of the German Handball Federation of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and was a member of the Council of the International Handball Federation .

Milius was born the son of the ship carpenter August Milius . From 1909 to 1917 he attended the Westerhüsen elementary school in Magdeburg-Westerhüsen . From 1918 to 1945 he worked as a lathe operator and drill. He lived in Westerhüsen at the address Alt Westerhüsen 35 at least in the 1930s / 1950s .

He was involved in workers 'sports and began to train the first handball teams for Magdeburg workers' sports clubs in 1923 . For the 1st Workers ' Sports Olympiad in Frankfurt / Main in 1925 , he was the supervisor of the national handball team of the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association (ATSB). Through his work, Magdeburg became one of the most important centers in handball workers' sport.

After the end of the Second World War , Milius, who belonged to the SPD , founded the municipal sports department of the city of Magdeburg together with Erich Sichting ( KPD ) and the non-party Rudi Fritz in August 1945, with the consent of the Soviet military command. From 1948 he was then head of the district sports committee of the city. His most important field of activity remained handball. He was one of the founding members of the handball section in the German Sports Committee of the GDR. In 1955 he became vice-president of the German handball association of the GDR, in 1957 he took over the office of president. On June 21, 1958 he was elected President of the newly founded GDR handball association. In 1964 he was elected to the Council of the International Handball Federation . In 1976 he was made an honorary member there.
