Cough drops or throat drops are candies that are said to relieve coughs and sore throats (e.g. sore throats ) by adding essential oils or special herbal extracts .

ingredients

Cough drops are said to have a decongestant and expectorant effect and clear the airways. Depending on the recipe, local pain anesthesia is also aimed for.

Cough drops therefore often contain essential oils such as eucalyptus oil or mint oil or isolated menthol . Furthermore, extracts from medicinal herbs such as sage , ribwort , cowslip and marshmallow are used. The Ladies Conversations Lexicon of 1835 already knows that " gargles and sweets are useful" to relieve coughs .

Manufacturing

The process is similar to that used for making other sweets. The herbs are melted in a jar together with glucose or sugar substitutes such as isomalt . The liquid mass is poured into molds to solidify. Candies that are not individually wrapped are often covered with a separating layer to prevent them from sticking.
