Krugerol

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Krügerol is a neck candy manufacturer known primarily in East Germany .

history

Max Richard Krüger (1873–1930), owner of the Krügerol company (painting by Eugen Urban , 1928)

In 1866 Richard Armandus Krüger founded a grocery and specialty shop on Leipziger Grimmaische Strasse, where he sold the real Krügerol catarrh sweets , which were made according to his own recipe . Natural ingredients are menthol, mint, sage, mountain pine, thyme, camphor and anise oils. In order to be able to produce the throat sweets in large numbers, Krüger opened a factory in Luppenstrasse 24 in 1876.

According to the manufacturer, the Krügerol throat candies became the most popular East German throat candies in the following years, especially during the GDR era . In 1990 production had to be stopped due to outdated production facilities and a lack of financial resources for new investments. The Krügerol factory on Luppenstrasse was converted into apartments and lofts in 2009.

In the summer of 1994, the production and marketing of Krügerol throat sweets by Krügerol GmbH in Leipzig was resumed. The candies were distributed by the Klosterfrau Healthcare Group from Cologne . Krügerol has been part of The Fine Food Company from Austria since 2018. The sweets are now manufactured by Bodeta Süßwaren GmbH in Oschersleben (Bode) .
