Eugen Marius Karl Urban (born October 21, 1868 in Leipzig ; † October 21, 1929 there ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Live and act

Urban was the son of the master baker and house owner Johann Carl Urban (born September 28, 1839, † November 4, 1897) and Katharina Franziska Anna (born Ratzovski, * December 20, 1837, † February 24, 1882). He received his artistic training at the academies in Leipzig and Munich and at the art school in Weimar . He was a student of Carl von Marr and Carl Frithjof Smith .

Urban developed into a sought-after portraitist of his time. His main works include the monumental painting by the Leipzig council for the council chamber of the New Town Hall in 1903 and the portrait of Rector and Deans, created in 1909 for the 500th anniversary of Leipzig University, as well as the colossal paintings in the orangery of Reinhardsbrunn Palace .

In addition to portraits of personalities from politics, the nobility, industry and science, Urban also drew graphics and worked as a landscape painter. Parts of his artistic estate can be found in the Leipzig City History Museum .

Eugen Urban was married to Frieda Elsa Urban, b. Seidel (born September 25, 1878, † April 4, 1946), the marriage had three children (Eleonore * February 21, 1898, † December 31, 1977; Gerhard Peter Bernhard Constantin * April 5, 1901, † May 1984; Gertraude Annemarie Veronika * April 10, 1905, † April 20, 1990). His urn grave was in the south cemetery in Leipzig. The tomb was abandoned in 2009.
