The Ricola AG is a Swiss manufacturer of herbal candies, pearls, pastilles, instant tea bags and headquartered in Basel scenic running and subsidiaries in Italy, the UK, Asia and the United States. The company says it exports to around 50 countries in Europe, Asia and North America.

Ricola is a family business and is controlled by the Richterich family; Felix Richterich is the Chairman of the Board of Directors. At the end of November 2011, following the death of Adrian Kohler, he also took over the position of managing director until he was replaced by Thomas P. Meier in May 2019.

history

In 1930, the master baker Emil Richterich founded the confectionery factory Richterich & Compagnie (Richterich & Co., Laufen) in his native Laufen, a small country town near Basel . Together with his employees, he subsequently developed numerous candy specialties that he sold in the region.

Emil Richterich dealt intensively with the healing power of herbs and in 1940 he first mixed the recipe of 13 herbs that is still used today for Swiss herbal sugar.

Since 1987 the company Klosterfrau Healthcare Group has been selling Ricola products in Germany. In 2019, sales in Germany will switch to CFP Brands , a joint venture in which Ricola has a stake.

In the summer of 2014, the new production building was put into operation in Laufen. It is made of clay and is the largest clay house in Europe. The construction was developed by the Austrian ceramist and earth building pioneer Martin Rauch, the architects were Herzog & de Meuron .

Surname

The company name Ricola is an acronym and is derived from the first two letters of the surname of the founder, the word Compagnie and the first two letters of the location ( Ri chterich Co mpagnie La ufen).

For decades, the core of the product range has been Swiss herbal sugar : a sugar candy with a mixture of thirteen herbs that are said to have a soothing effect on hoarseness, sore throats and coughs.

The herbs used are grown exclusively in accordance with organic guidelines in Swiss mountain regions ( Valais , Emmental , Puschlav , Jura Südfuss , Central Switzerland and Ticino ). When growing herbs, herbicides or pesticides are not used. Over 100 autonomous farms are under contract with Ricola.

The company offers several variations of the sweets that are supplemented with oils, natural flavorings or vitamin C. The variants include menthol , black currant, orange mint, sage, lemon balm , cranberry , original herbs, sea ​​buckthorn , elderflower, cherry-mint, cherry-honey, Alpin Fresh, eucalyptus, apple mint, liquorice and mountain mint. Sugar-free versions are also available. The product range is individually tailored to each market. Filled candies are also available in Germany and North America, for example.

Ricola has also been selling instant tea for around 40 years, which is now available in Switzerland in the varieties elderflower, lemon balm, herbal tea and Gut 'Nacht tea. In 2007, bag teas in the flavors herbs, Swiss mint, verveine and lemon balm were introduced. Capsule teas complement the offer today.

In 1980 the jingle used to this day for Ricola was introduced. In the commercials, Ramona Pringle , among others, sings the characteristic RI-CO-LA , in some spots Heidi .

In 1998 the first spot of the advertising campaign was launched with the slogan Who invented it? broadcast. To date, the spots have been shot in Finland (1998), Australia (1998), England (1999), Mexico (2000), China (2004), Brazil (2004) and Greenland (2008). The actor was Erich Vock .

Since 2013 Ricola has been advertising internationally with the Swiss-German slogan “Chrüterchraft”. «Chrüterchraft is a Swiss word. It stands for herbs, for effect and enjoyment.
