The Dr. C. Soldan GmbH ( spelling Dr. C. SOLDAN ) is a German confectionery manufacturer based in Adelsdorf , which was founded in 1899 by pharmacist and medical advisor Carl Soldan.

According to its own information, the company employed around 220 people in 2018/2019 and achieved gross sales of 77.6 million euros. Dr. C. Soldan around 4,500 tons of candy.

The managing directors are Perry Soldan and Karl-Heinz Hödl.

history

In 1899 the pharmacist and medical advisor Carl Soldan founded a "medical drugstore" and perfumery on Hefnersplatz in Nuremberg. A wholesaler for bandages and drugstore supplies was added later .

In 1923 Carl Soldan developed the Em-eukal candy recipe with eucalyptus and menthol. In 1929 Carl Soldan bought a gingerbread and confectionery factory on Herderstrasse in Doos (Muggenhof) , Nuremberg. After renovating the company building, he also relocated the production of Em-eukal sweets there.

In the 1940s, the company expanded to include the Frankdruck printing company, which initially produced candy bags and later accepted orders for AEG , Grundig and Quelle . In the 1980s, printing was the most profitable part of the company. Dr. C. Soldan also operated up to nine perfumery branches in Nuremberg, Lauf and Neumarkt.

In 1960 production was relocated to Adelsdorf for reasons of space. On an area of ​​around 13,500 square meters, sweets, medicines and other confectionery (fruit juice bears, gummy drops, etc.) are produced and packaged on six production lines.

Since 1962, Dr. C. Soldan the pharmaceutical manufacturing license in accordance with the Medicines Act, which is now valid throughout the EU.

In 1972 the “Kinder Em-eukal” brand was developed.

Since 1989 the company has also been offering sugar-free sweets based on the sugar substitute isomalt . The sweetener sucralose has also been used since 2004 .

According to its own information, the company has been BIO-certified by BCS Öko-Garantie GmbH since 2004 and today also has the IFS “Higher Level” certificate and the European GMP certificate.

In 2005, Felix Soldan, who had run the company in the third generation, died. He was succeeded by his son Perry Soldan.

Because of the growing competition from drugstore chains, the perfumeries were closed in 2005. The print shop was also given up in 2007. From 2005 to 2009, the company halved its number of employees to 190.

Due to decreasing sales figures, the company concentrated its marketing on "Em-eukal" from the beginning of 2008 . The brands "Em-herbal" and "Em-fital" were discontinued. In an extensive brand relaunch, the lettering and bag designs were adapted to the new “one-brand strategy”. Only “Kinder Em-eukal” was left out of this change. In addition to the pharmacies, marketing was now also directed towards the food retail trade as well as the convenience and mass market . Within a year, sales in pharmacies rose by eleven percent; the market share rose in two years to November 2009 by 4.9 percent.

In 2009 the company sold four percent of its products abroad.

In 2014 the company moved into its new administrative building at the production site in Adelsdorf.

In addition to Em-eukal and Kinder Em-eukal , Dr. C. Soldan also brand owner of Em-eukal PRO , aecht Bayrischer Blockmalz , Original Bärengarten and Rheila . In addition, the company sells the Tex-Schmelz brand in pharmacies and drugstores and produces hard candies, pharmaceutical products and cast articles for clients in the pharmaceutical, food and retail sectors.
