Sore throats are a common symptom of abnormal changes in the throat, mouth and throat. Up to 5% of patients at the pediatrician complain of a sore throat, in a general medical practice an average of two patients per week are treated for sore throats. The most important step is to distinguish between antibiotic-treated bacterial disease from other causes.

The pain in the context of inflammation is caused by the release of pain messenger substances ( prostaglandin E2 , prostaglandin I2, bradykinin and other kinins ) and cytokines ( tumor necrosis factor ), which are released by activation of immune cells (see inflammation ). Sore throat without pharyngitis

In the head and neck area, otitis , sinusitis , salivary gland infections , tooth affections , thyroiditis , neck muscle tension , glossopharyngeal neuralgia , retropharyngeal abscess , epiglottitis or swollen cervical lymph nodes can also be the cause of the symptoms. Also mediastinal disorders can cause sore throat, z. E.g .: angina pectoris , thoracic aortic aneurysm , mediastinitis , pneumomediastinum and esophagitis . Systemic diseases such as leukemia , agranulocytosis , rubella , mycoplasma pneumonia can also be a cause.

Causes of Pharyngitis

Often the cause of a sore throat is an inflamed throat ( pharyngitis ). The inflammation can be triggered by bacteria, viruses, other pathogens or physical noxae. Common causes are group A strep, Epstein-Barr virus, and tobacco. The streptococcal angina is found mainly in children aged 5 to 15 years, the infection is via a droplet infection. After the incubation period of 2 to 4 days, sore throats and difficulty swallowing develop, usually in combination with a fever above 38 ° C and swelling of the cervical lymph nodes. Symptoms of a common cold such as coughing, runny nose and hoarseness can be assumed to have a viral cause.

Other meanings
