The gymnastics club 05/07 Hüttenberg e. V. ( short: TV Hüttenberg ) is a sports club from Hüttenberg in Central Hesse. The club became known for its handball team, which played in the handball Bundesliga for a total of fifteen years until 1985 , eight of them in the single-track Bundesliga. For the 2017/18 season, TV Hüttenberg returned to the 1st handball Bundesliga for the second time since 2011 , after the team had been relegated to the 3rd division two years earlier .

timeline

TV Hüttenberg was created in 1969 through the merger of the associations TV Hochelheim (founded in 1905) and TV Hörnsheim (founded in 1907). One of the decisive triggers for the merger was the re-establishment of the community of Hüttenberg in 1968. Both clubs were already known nationwide as handball strongholds.

In 1968 Rudolf Spengler became a trainer. He stayed that way until 1979. This was the club's most successful sporting period. In 1972 he was promoted to the then two-pronged Bundesliga . 1974 Hüttenberg was first in the Bundesliga South. In 1977 and 1978 the club was DHB vice-cup winner and in 1978/79 it took part in the European Cup. For the 1979/80 season, Peter Barthelmey took over as coach from Rudolf Spengler, who had left after eleven years. The team finished fourth in the Bundesliga, but suffered relegation difficulties the following season. Rudolf Spengler's son Horst Spengler , captain of the German world championship team from 1978, took over as player-coach together with Klaus Meineke and Harald Ohly and saved the TVH in ninth place. As a founding member of the single-track handball Bundesliga , the club stayed in the top German division until 1985.

In the 1990s, TV Hüttenberg was overtaken by local rivals HSG Wetzlar and even had to compete in the regional league for a few years . In 2004 he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. In 2011 Hüttenberg was able to reach the relegation games for promotion as second in the 2nd Bundesliga South. The team prevailed against GWD Minden and celebrated their return to the Bundesliga. But already in the following season, TV Hüttenberg had to accept relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga, from which TVH was relegated again in summer 2015. After an extremely successful season 15/16 in League 3 with 54:06 points, the promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga followed.

Thanks to a solid performance by the team around coach Aðalsteinn Eyjólfsson , the TVH fought for a respectable second place in the 2nd Bundesliga and the associated promotion to the handball Bundesliga in the 2016/17 season . The renewed promotion after 2011, in a heart-stopping final on the last game day, was a sporting sensation, because no team had managed to march from the 3rd division to the 1st division since the single-track second division was founded.

On October 23, 2017, Emir Kurtagic succeeded coach Aðalsteinn Eyjólfsson , who had previously switched to HC Erlangen . After the 23:28 defeat against Füchse Berlin on the last day of the 2017/18 season, Hüttenberg was relegated to the 2nd handball Bundesliga .

mascot

At the start of the second half of the 2017/18 season in the handball Bundesliga , TV Hüttenberg presented its own mascot for the first time. In the home game against SC DHfK Leipzig on matchday 18, "Rollo" entered the field. The figure embodies the characteristics that make Hüttenberg what it is in the nationwide perception - handball and hand cheese.

Sports center Hüttenberg

Sports hall East Giessen

Due to the new editions of the handball Bundesliga, it was not possible for TV Hüttenberg to play its home games in the first division in the sports hall in Hüttenberg in the 2017/18 season (only 1,600 places out of 2,200 required). After a long planning phase, those responsible for Hüttenberg decided to switch to the Gießen Ost sports hall . The home ground is also home to the Giessen 46ers . This gave the blue-white-reds a venue for the 2017/18 season that could hold 2,700 spectators. In the 2018/19 season, Hüttenberg will again play some top games in the "Osthalle" in Gießen.
