The TuS Ferndorf e. V. is a sports club from the North Rhine-Westphalian Kreuztal - Ferndorf . It was founded in 1888.
The more than 1500 members mainly practice popular sports . Especially in handball , but also in athletics as well as in tennis and table tennis also is competitive sport operated.
Handball
The most important department are the handball players. There are currently three men's, one women's and nine youth teams. The first men's team has been playing in the 2nd division since being promoted from the 3rd division in the 2017/18 season. The second team plays in the fourth-class Oberliga Westfalen in the 2019/20 season. The home games take place in the Stählerwiese triple hall of the Kreuztal school center, which regularly offers 600 seats and over 400 standing places; at the top games up to 1200 spectators are counted. Furthermore, TuS Ferndorf uses the double hall in Kreuztal with 200 seats and a small sports hall in Ferndorf. The start of the expansion of the Stählerwiese hall is planned for spring 2020.
Field handball
As early as the 1950s, TuS belonged to the Oberliga Westfalen as the top division of the time for a number of years. With the last promotion in 1963, the team established itself there, but clearly missed qualification for the newly introduced Bundesliga in 1966. In 1968 and 1969 the Kreuztalers missed promotion to the West German championship twice as Westphalian champions, but qualified for the Regionalliga West, which was introduced from 1970. From there, he was promoted to the Bundesliga as West German champions in the first season. In the only Bundesliga season, the TuS finished last in the northern season with just seven points from fourteen games and thus immediately rose again. 1972 won the relay again and won the championship in the Regionalliga West, but due to the special regulations on the occasion of the 1972 Olympic Games (where handball was only played indoors, so the field handball season was only played under restricted conditions and without national players), promotion was in the Bundesliga suspended. In 1973 TuS Ferndorf was again the season winner and then West German runner-up behind TSV Altenhagen 03 . Since the Bundesliga was abolished after this season, nobody was promoted to it. In the last season of the Feldhandball-Regionalliga West, TuS Ferndorf was again the season winner in 1975 without losing points (24-0 points), but missed qualification for the last German championship in field handball due to a 20:27 defeat against TuS Nettelstedt in the West German finals .
Development since 2011
In March 2011 it was decided to outsource the first team to a marketing GmbH for liability and financial reasons. The team won the third division west in 2011, but had previously announced that they would not play in the second division for financial reasons. The following season was all about preparation for promotion. With the help of sponsors, it was possible early on to increase the budget by 35% for the next season. After the 2012/2013 season in the 2nd handball Bundesliga , the team was relegated to the 3rd division . In 2015 he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga.
After two seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga, the team was relegated to the 3rd League West at the end of the 2016/2017 season.
In the DHB Cup , the club reached the round of 16 for the first time in the 2017/18 season. The home game against the German champions Rhein-Neckar-Löwen was played on October 18, 2017 in the Schwalbe-Arena in Gummersbach. With around 3,500 spectators, more visitors were reached there than would have been possible in the local sports hall in Kreuztal. Ferndorf lost 24:28. Previously, in the first round of the tournament, Bundesliga club GWD Minden and second division TV Emsdetten had eliminated two higher-class teams.
The 2017/18 season ended with 59: 1 points as champions and thus managed to get promoted back to the 2nd Bundesliga. Only on the last day of the match there was the first point loss of the season with an 18:18 draw against SG Schalksmühle-Halver . The first half of the 2nd handball Bundesliga 2018/19 ended the TuS with 12 wins from 19 games as the best newcomer in four years. Five game days before the end of the season, TuS managed to stay early.
For the 2019/20 season, the Spielbetriebs-GmbH's budget will increase from € 830,000 to € 950,000, which is still well below the league average. On November 7, 2019, the 11th matchday of the 2019/20 season saw the derby for the first time in the club's history in a competitive game against VfL Gummersbach , which was relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time in the previous season . Gummersbach won in his own hall with 19:18. In November 2019 it was announced that Michael Lerscht , who has been head coach since 2015, would leave the club after the season for league competitor ASV Hamm 04/69 Handball . With Robert Andersson , a successor was signed for the 2020/21 season. The 2019/20 season, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , ended the TuS in 9th place according to the quotient regulation.
Handball department
The second team of TuS Ferndorf managed to stay in the fourth-class Oberliga Westfalen in the 2017/18 season. Thus, in the 2018/19 season, after the 2015/16 season, the "Youngsters" began their third season in the major league, in which the first team played until 2008. In the 2018/2019 season, the reserve team repeated its surprise success from the previous year and remained fourth-rate.
The women's team plays in the South Westphalia district league in the 2019/20 season.
The club's A-youth has participated in the A-youth Bundesliga four times since the 2011/12 season.
