Ferndorf [ 'fɛʁn.dɔʁf ] is a district of Kreuztal in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Siegen-Wittgenstein .

The village, which until 1969 was the center of the Ferndorf office , which administered 13 municipalities , is traversed by the Ferndorfbach named after him . The highest point in Ferndorf is the Birkhahn at 604.5 meters , just below the 617.9 meter high Kindelsberg .

history

The place was first mentioned under the name "Berentraph" in 1067 and is therefore one of the oldest places in the Siegerland . On a temporary settlement by "Neolithic shepherds" before 1800 BC. BC indicates a stone tool find.

In the Ferndorf district there was the former settlement of Ahe . On March 8, 1319 a "Heydinrich van der A" was named. The settlement, previously just one courtyard, consisted of four courtyards and was evacuated and disbanded around 1700.

Until the end of 1968 Ferndorf was the seat of the Ferndorf office of the same name, which also included the communities of Bockenbach , Buchen (until 1966), Burgholdinghausen , Buschhütten , Eichen , Ernsdorf (until 1928), Fellinghausen , Kreuztal , Krombach , Littfeld , Osthelden and Stendenbach . The center of the village is the Laurentius Church , built around 1250 in the late Romanesque style .

On January 1, 1969, Ferndorf went through the second law for the reorganization of the district of Siegen under protest of the Ferndorf citizens in the city of Kreuztal created by the municipal reorganization.

Economy and Infrastructure

The section between Kreuztal and Hilchenbach , part of the Kreuztal – Cölbe railway line, has been in operation since March 1, 1884 . The Fahrpost, a carriage operation, was discontinued at the same time. At the end of 2011, ticket issuance at the Ferndorf train station was closed. Ferndorf has a long tradition of metal processing companies. Today the most important companies are thyssenkrupp and the Bender pipe plant.

Sports

Ferndorf is home to TuS Ferndorf , which was founded in 1888 and is best known for its handball department. There is also the “Ferndorfer Mühle” riding club, the “Hubertus” rifle club, the Kreuztal-Ferndorf dog friends and the Ferndorf rehabilitation sports club.

The Ferndorf-Lennestadt aviation club, which is based on the Ferndorf glider tradition between 1928 and 1941, has a special position. The former pilot's home in the fields above Ferndorf is evidence of this.

Ferndorf has had a natural outdoor pool in the Zitzenbachtal since 1927.

Personalities

The pianist and composer Volker Bertelmann , known under the stage name Hauschka, grew up in Ferndorf. The artist, who lives in Düsseldorf, named his album "Ferndorf", released in 2009, after his home village.

In addition, the founder of the Geisweider Eisenwerke Kommerzienrat Friedrich Klein († May 26, 1898 in Siegen ) was born in Ferndorf .
