Drew Allison Carey (born May 23, 1958 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American comedian , show host , actor , screenwriter and television producer .

Life

Carey grew up as the youngest of three children; his father died when Carey was eight years old. He attended Kent State University , but left it early and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for six years . After retiring, he moved to Las Vegas briefly before returning to Cleveland. From 1985 he pursued a career as a stand-up comedian . He performed in clubs in Cleveland and Los Angeles for several years and took part in the US edition of Star Search in 1988. He made his first national appearances in 1991 on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show and in Late Night with David Letterman .

In 1993 he had his first own show on the pay TV channel Showtime , for which he was awarded the CableACE Award . That same year he had a small role in the comedy film Coneheads . In 1994 he played one of the lead roles in the sitcom The Good Life , which was discontinued after 13 episodes. Together with Bruce Helford he developed the comedy series Drew Carey Show , which was broadcast in 233 episodes between 1995 and 2004. For the series, he received the People's Choice Award and the Golden Satellite Award . From 1998 Carey hosted the comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? , of which 223 episodes were broadcast until 2006. Based on the show, Frei Schnauze was later created in Germany with Dirk Bach as the presenter. In 2000 he played the title role in the Disney TV musical Geppetto . After Bob Barker withdrew from the US version of the game show The Price is Hot , Carey has been moderating it since 2007.

In addition to his own shows, Carey had various guest appearances: in 1999 he was seen in a music video by Weird Al Yankovic , in 2001 he took part in the Royal Rumble of World Wrestling Entertainment , where he did not actively intervene in the fight, but after less than a minute fled the ring and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Kane in 2011 . In 2008 he appeared in an episode of The Simpsons . He also played guest roles in television series such as Listen, who hammers and Nikki and had a speaking role in the computer animation film Robots .

Carey attended the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa as a fan of the US national soccer team .
