action

Jack Sadelstein has a life that others can only dream of. He is a successful advertising producer for the Dunkin Donuts company, has a wife and two children. But every Thanksgiving year, his eccentric twin sister Jill visits him. Jill originally only wanted to stay for the weekend, but she decides to extend her stay. Jack is annoyed because he has other worries. His company desperately wants to shoot a commercial with Al Pacino and Jack is supposed to persuade the movie star to do so. He drives his sister to a basketball game where they meet Al Pacino and Johnny Depp . The initially dismissive Al Pacino is on fire for Jill after the first encounter. Now Jack's visit with his sister isn't so wrong anymore, but there is a catch: Jill isn't enthusiastic about Pacino.

A week later, the Sadelsteins go on a cruise to Europe with Jill. Jack tries to convince Jill to rendezvous with Al Pacino, but she refuses. Finally Jack sees no other way out: He disguises himself as Jill and goes to Pacino. The real Jill feels humiliated and leaves. When she got home, she was surprised to find Jack and his family there. While attending an alumni party, Jill gets into a heated argument with an old schoolmate. In the midst of the tumult, Al Pacino, who is deeply in love, appears unexpectedly in a theatrical costume. Jill explains to Pacino that her heart is already taken and that she loves the Mexican gardener who tends Jack's garden. Al Pacino channels his disappointment into a wild stick fight with the ceiling fan. In the end, Jack recognizes the big heart under the rough shell of his sister and Jill finds a man who loves her with her quirks.

title

For native English speakers, the title refers to a popular nursery rhyme . In this rhyme, Jack and Jill are a boy and a girl who stumble into momentous inconvenience on their way to the well, just like twin siblings Jack and Jill in the film.

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after.

background

The budget for the film was $ 79 million. On the weekend of the release, Jack and Jill grossed a good 25 million US dollars. By the end of February 2012, the film had grossed 149 million US dollars worldwide.

The scenes on the cruise ship were filmed on the Allure of the Seas .

Awards

As the first film in the 32-year history of the Golden Raspberry, Jack and Jill received the award in all categories at the 2012 Golden Raspberry Awards .

Reviews

Overall, the film met with devastating criticism. It is rated 3% on the Rotten Tomatoes review collection site , so only 3 of the 105 reviews collected were positive. The star thinks that Sandler is “untrustworthy”, but attests the film “entertainment for the whole family” and praises the “self-deprecating and well-humored Al Pacino”. The Austrian standard also praised Pacino's performance, but criticized the "brute comedy" and the predictability of the gags. Mary Pols of Time Magazine and the TV Guide consider the film to be the worst of 2011. Andrew Barker of Variety wrote: “It's just general stupidity, sloppy directing, and relying on single gags that weren't funny from the start the most obvious problems of this film. "

In contrast, Björn Becher awarded film starts 4 out of 5 stars and judged: “For us, 'Jack and Jill' is damn entertaining and anything but stupid. In short: the best Adam Sandler comedy in a long time. ”On fluter .de, Christian Horn also gave the film a rating of 4 out of 5 stars:“ Because the irony simmers dryly under the surface, Jack and Jill are definitely not pleasing fast food movie. (...) First giggle in the cinema, but then complain in a very routine manner - you know the principle. It's nice that at least a few isolated film critics wave through the ironic foundation of Jack and Jill with a clear conscience. And since when has Adam Sandler been responsible when others don't understand his irony? "
