action

In Japan there is a legend of the "great white ninja " who will one day come to the country. When a small, white child is found, it is believed that it is precisely that legendary warrior and is raised in a ninja school. But from the first moment on, the obese Haru behaves extremely clumsy. His "teacher" ( Japanese: 'Sensei') tries hard, but Haru simply cannot match the achievements of his foster brother Gobei.

However, his life changes when he meets the beautiful Allison Page. She introduces herself to Haru as Sally Jones and asks him to shadow her "friend" Martin Tanley, who is meeting in Japan . Haru complies with her request and finds out that Tanley and his accomplice Nobu are counterfeit money makers. They received a suitcase full of printing plates from their meeting partner Izumo. When Tanley learns that Izumo has only brought printing plates that can only be printed on one side, Tanley kills him. Unintentionally, Haru becomes a witness and is promptly suspected by the police since he was seen with Izumo's body. But Haru can escape.

Despite his Senseis worries, Haru wants to leave for Beverly Hills to help Alison. Haru finally flies, unsuspecting Gobei as a protégé, to Beverly Hills, where he moves into a five-star hotel. There he befriends Joey, the bellhop, before continuing to look for Alison. After a long search, he finds Alison thanks to Gobei. He then pursues Tanley, who tries to get hold of the printing plates from a group called Kobudosai. Haru follows him to a night club. While Haru is dancing with the strippers on stage , Tanley meets with Mr. Ozaru, a member of the Kobudosai, from whom he wants the printing plates. But Ozaru wants the printing plates for himself and threatens Tanley. But when Ozaru and his bodyguard don't pay attention for a moment, Tanley and Nobu both kill them. Haru, who has since been thrown out of the nightclub, is again under suspicion of murder.

With the help of Senseis, with whom he has telepathic contact, Haru finds Alison in Tanley's villa. There Haru learns the truth about Alison. She is only Tanley's friend because she suspects him of murdering her sister. Haru also learns of Tanley's appointments and follows him to a restaurant. There he learns that Tanley intends to meet with print specialist Chet Walters. However, his shadowing is disturbed by the Kobudosai who want to kill Tanley for the murder of Ozaru. The attack is missed by Haru and after a fight in which Gobei is involved, he escapes with Alison before Tanley can kill her.

After one night they both pay a visit to Chet Walters. Haru tries to stun him with a special ninja grip, but fails, so Alison knocks Walters unconscious. They learn the meeting point through a recipe that Walters uses to tell the truth. Haru slips into Walter's role and arrives at Tanley's secret hiding place. Unfortunately, he's caught and captured. After Haru is captured, Tanley meets the Kobudosai heads in a temple and unbuttons their plates. Alison frees Haru, but when she calls the police, Tanley catches her. The police come and want to arrest Haru. With Gobei's help, Haru escapes. He wants to give up, but with the encouragement of his senseis, Haru and Joey make their way to Tanley's base, but this fails miserably. Haru arrives at Tanley's hiding place, again with Gobei's help. There Tanley tries to kill Alison with a bomb. Tanley's men attack Haru, but he is saved by Gobei, who now gives up his game of hide-and-seek. Haru tries to defuse the bomb, but fails. In addition, Gobei is slowly getting into danger. This time Haru saves him and turns off the men. However, they are attacked shortly afterwards by Nobu and two other men. After Joey unexpectedly kills a man, Haru and Gobei defeat Nobu and his assistant. Tanley wants to kill Haru, but Haru knocks him out at short notice and rushes to help Alison. He manages to throw the bomb away. Tanley tries to escape, but the bomb destroys his getaway car. He and his helpers are arrested and Gobei is taken to hospital. Joey poses as the "big black ninja" in front of the press.

At the end Haru says goodbye to the Sensei and Gobei. He hands him his medallion. Then Haru drives away - which becomes a painful affair for Gobei.

Reviews

James Berardinelli found the film's humor in his review on ReelViews as "childish", "boring" and "uncomfortable". He compared Chris Farley negatively to John Candy . Berardinelli described only Farley's “unexpected sporting skill” in some scenes as “amazing”.

The lexicon of international films judged: “Gaudy parody of the genre of ninja films, which takes up some typical characters and motifs, but ultimately exhausts itself in tired gags. Also not convincing in terms of staging. "

The conclusion of TV Spielfilm was: "Ninjas don't deserve such disgrace."

background

  • Many of the scenes were shot in Pasadena and Malibu instead of Beverly Hills .
