The screenplay was written by Tim Doyle based on a novel by Felix Salten and based on the screenplay of the film The Unheimliche Zotti , which was written by Bill Walsh and Lillie Hayward .

The shy and somewhat eccentric Wilbert "Wilby" Daniels often helps out his father in the family museum. By chance one day he discovers the magical power of an exhibit and, to his own horror, at times turns into a dog. That doesn't make it easier for him to win the favor of the neighbor's daughter Alice, but he discovers in his dog form that the new neighbor is in reality a jewel thief who is after his father's museum.
