Chuck & Larry - As fire and flame (original title I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry ) is a comedy film from the year 2007 by director Dennis Dugan with Adam Sandler and Kevin James in the lead roles.

action

Playboy Chuck Levine and Larry Valentine, who has been widowed for three years and a single father of two, are friends, but completely different firefighters in Brooklyn . One day the down-to-earth Larry notices that he has failed to transfer his wife's pension entitlements to their two children and to provide for them financially. However, his pension fund would be willing to accept his children as beneficiaries and thus secure them financially if he succeeds in entering into a new marriage as quickly as possible. When Chuck's life is in danger during a dangerous fire service, Larry saves his life. Chuck is not only grateful to Larry, but also feels obliged to him. The next day Larry happened to read a newspaper report about domestic partnerships of same-sex couples. He spontaneously drives to Chuck at four o'clock in the morning and asks his best friend to enter into a partnership with him so that he can close his pension gap and his children are covered. Chuck reluctantly agrees after Larry assures him that no one will find out about their community of convenience.

After the pension fund hires an investigator to investigate the case, the fictitious couple hires the attractive lawyer Alex McDonough. Chuck falls in love with her, but first has to hide his love from her in order to maintain the appearance of homosexual cohabitation. After miming the gay buddy for a while, the two of them get closer and kiss. The skeleton of lies of the two is shaken.

Ultimately, however, Chuck and Larry get on with their lie. When the two are supposed to kiss during a negotiation to prove the authenticity of their partnership, their superior Captain Tucker intervenes and lets both of them exposed as heterosexual liars. You are now facing jail time. After the entire fire brigade workforce, who had ostracized the two bogus gays before the trial, show solidarity with the two, they too are charged with aiding and abetting and end up in a cell with Chuck and Larry. There they are later visited by Councilor Banks, who suggests that if they confess to the fraud they drop the charges. The city council would then only prosecute the offense as an administrative offense. Since the two are now not only well known in the gay scene, but are also seen as role models in the fight for equality even after their confession, Chuck and Larry should also commit themselves to a benefit calendar together with their fire service colleagues to have photos taken for the benefit of AIDS research.

Reviews

MovieFix's film critic David Beirne said the Chuck & Larry plot would be anything but new to anyone who has watched the Australian film Strange Bedfellows . Rather, it would be surprising how obviously the Strange Bedfellows premise was copied.

Cinema wrote: “Honestly? One could get angry with Chuck and Larry . It is hardly noticeable that none other than Alexander Payne (Oscar for Sideways ) was at work as a script doctor: flat stereotypes, silly antiquated - at least for Europeans. On the other hand, this film is aimed at a clientele who would not get ten horses at Brokeback Mountain . Adam Sandler's fans (and in the US it's the masses) promoted the harmless clothes pronto to number 1 on the cinema charts: That's entertainment, man! Even the homophobic 'Sandlerista', who complains on the Internet that Canada is ostracized as a nation of 'gay lovers', has roared. As a plea for more tolerance, the slapstick comes across as crude. But the message - presented in the usual coarse Sandler tone - is unmistakable: 'Everyone has the right to shove themselves up their asses, whatever they want.' Conclusion: Me and him: Infantile buddy movie that just manages to get around - just don't take it too seriously. "

The film service judges: “Despite a number of follies, it is a profound comedy that advocates tolerance. She has some amazing pieces ready for her swaggering leading actor. "

Critic.de said: “ Chuck and Larry - Like Fire and Flame is above all a successful comedy that stays true to its theme and its two main characters. The heterosexual affection between Chuck and his lawyer is not brought to the fore either. However, until the end the film does not overcome its external perspective of homosexuals, which is dictated by the protagonists' point of view: in the end, they remain staffage and lesbians hardly appear. On the other hand, gays hop through the picture more often, throwing themselves into shrill clothes or at least intoning pop songs in the shower in a high voice. "
