Life
At the age of two, Dave Matthews emigrated with his parents to Westchester County ( New York ), where his father, a physicist by profession , began working for IBM .
In the early 1970s he moved to Cambridge ( United Kingdom ), before returning back to New York.
In 1980 the family returned to South Africa. Dave Matthews attended various schools there. According to the country of birth of South African citizens, Matthews should have done two years of military service immediately after graduating from high school. Since the family belonged to the religious-pacifist Quakers , that was not what they wanted. The mother obtained a special leave of absence from Charlottesville University, where her father had been a dignitary as a physics professor, so that her son Dave was accepted there.
He had the idea for his own band after moving to Charlottesville ( Virginia had moved), the place where his parents had lived before he was born. There he participated in the local music scene.
In early 1991 he founded the Dave Matthews Band . At the time he was working as a bartender at Miller's in Charlottesville. The band's first appearance was on May 11, 1991 at a private party in downtown Charlottesville.
In 1993 the first album of the Dave Matthews band Remember two things was released . That same year, Matthews' sister Anne died in South Africa. The album Under the Table and Dreaming is dedicated to her.
Dave Matthews released the solo album Some Devil in late 2003 , which was only moderately successful despite generally good reviews. With the single Gravedigger , however, he won a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance - Male in 2004 . The song was covered by Willie Nelson in 2008 .
In 2003 he played Will Coleman in the film adaptation of the novel Where the Red Fern Grows (Wilson Rawls). In 2005 he played the character Otis in the film Because of Winn-Dixie (German title: Mein Zotteliger Freund ), a film adaptation of the children's book of the same name by the author Kate DiCamillo . In 2007 he played a supporting role in Chuck and Larry - Like Fire and Flame . In 2008, Matthews took on a medium-sized role in Adam Sandler's Don't Mess With The Mess! In which he plays a right-wing radical who is tasked with pitting Jews and Palestinians against each other and burning the neighborhood down. He also had a guest appearance on the series Dr. House , in which he played a seriously ill musician. In 2011 he appeared again in a film by Adam Sandler in My Fictional Wife , he plays the husband of the school friend of Sandler's fictional wife. Matthews is good friends with Sandler.
