The Dave Matthews Band is an American rock band. It was founded by South African- born American singer , guitarist and songwriter David John Matthews in early 1991 in Charlottesville , Virginia .

Band history

Matthews formed the band with drummer Carter Beauford , bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist LeRoi Moore , violinist Boyd Tinsley and keyboardist Peter Griesar. The latter, however, left the band in early 1993. From 1997 to 2008 the keyboard was occupied by Butch Taylor as a permanent guest. This in turn left the band in 2008 immediately before the start of the tour. Saxophonist LeRoi Moore died unexpectedly on August 19, 2008 as a result of an accident on June 30, 2008.

The style of the band is characterized by the rather unorthodox line-up (acoustic guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, saxophone, violin) and the resulting sound. With their mixture of rock , pop , jazz , folk and funk, they quickly gained a good reputation in the local jamrock music scene. Accordingly, the number of prominent guest musicians who accompany the band on individual pieces during the extensive live tours and give the pieces new interpretations is correspondingly large. B. Neil Young, Warren Haynes, Carlos Santana, Béla Fleck, Phish, Ziggy Marley or John Mayer, to name just a few. Tim Reynolds played the electric guitar on the 2008 summer tour and Rashawn Ross had been there since 2005. In addition, LeRoi Moore was replaced for the time being by saxophonist Jeff Coffin, a long-time friend from the band Béla Fleck and the Flecktones .

Alanis Morissette can be heard as a guest singer on the studio album Before These Crowded Streets (1998) in the songs Don't Drink the Water and Spoon , Julia Roberts plays the female lead in the video for Dream Girl from Stand Up (2005) and in the song What Would You Say from the album Under the Table and Dreaming (1994) is played by the American blues musician John Popper on the harmonica.

In 1993 the debut live album Remember Two Things was released . So far, the band has sold over 35 million studio albums in the US alone (not counting the countless live albums), but so far it has not enjoyed great success in Europe.

The Dave Matthews Band, "America's biggest band" and consistently in the top 10 list of "top grossing tours" (most profitable tours; in 2000 they were even the most commercially successful live band), has a good reputation as a live Act and regularly fills halls and stadiums in the USA (in 2003 even the Great Lawn in Central Park with almost 120,000 spectators).

In 2007 the Dave Matthews Band was back in Europe after almost nine years. In August 2008, saxophonist LeRoi Moore died as a result of a quad accident. In the summer of 2009 the band gave various concerts in Europe, but none of them in Germany. In February / March 2010 the band toured Europe again. The biggest concert (o2 Millennium Dome ) took place in London on March 6th, and in Germany the band played in Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt and Munich.

After the announcement that they would not go on tour permanently for the first time in 20 years, the band played a few concerts under the motto Dave Matthews Band Caravan in 2011 .

After another European tour in 2015, the band will give concerts in Germany, Denmark, England, France, Holland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic in 2019.

The band gave various benefit and support concerts, for example on the occasion of Hurricane Katrina (2005), the rampage at Virginia Tech (2007), the oil protests at Standing Rock (2017) and the right-wing extremist demonstrations in Charlottesville (2017). In June 2016, the band supported Bernie Sanders' election campaign in the California primaries .

Violinist Tinsley was initially on leave in early 2018 and terminated without notice after allegations of sexual harassment. Also in 2018 Buddy Strong joined the band as keyboard player.
