Carter Beauford (born November 2, 1957 in Charlottesville , Virginia ) is an American drummer and member of the Dave Matthews Band .

Life

Carter Beauford discovered drumming at the age of 3 when his father Roland Beauford couldn't find a babysitter and instead had to take him to a concert by drummer Buddy Rich . From that day on, his enthusiasm for Buddy Rich and drums was unstoppable.

Carter made his first appearance at the age of 9 with a local jazz group, all of whose members were between 20 and 30 years old and who saw him as "a child drummer who can play".

The hi-hat and snare of his first drum kit , which u. a. consisted of paper skins stretched on sheet metal shells, it "incorrectly" placed it on the right-hand side (setup typical for left-handers, but he was right-handed), since Buddy Rich's drums appeared to be configured in this way for him from the audience's point of view. However, this 'little mistake' made sure that he can now use both left and right-handers.

As a student at Shenandoah College of Music, he met Billy Drummond , a New York jazz drummer. From then on he practiced with him every day. Although his skills steadily improved, he decided against studying music. After teaching history for twelve years in various elementary schools and high schools, he turned his back on this profession and decided to dedicate himself only to music: He began to play in a wide variety of country and disco bands, which, however, were often because of him of his daring style .

Between 1984 and 1990 Carter Beauford played in the band "Secrets" in Virginia. It was then that Dave Matthews discovered him. “The audience froze in awe of his game. I can honestly say I was overwhelmed, ”said Matthews.

However, it wasn't until January 1991, after playing for four years in Washington, DC on the Black Entertainment Television (BET) jazz show with musicians such as Roy Hargrove , that he began making his first recordings with Dave Matthews for a demo. During this time he always commuted back and forth between Charlottesville and Washington, but soon left the BET show and turned to the Dave Matthews Band , in which he still plays today.

Since the album " Before These Crowded Streets " he can also be heard on albums by Carlos Santana , John Popper , Victor Wooten and Robin Andre alias Boy Wonder .

In 2016, Rolling Stone listed Beauford 41st of the 100 best drummers of all time .
